Subject: Book recommendation re: music therapy?

Hello. I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a good book about what music therapists do. Two reasons:

1. I would like to know more about the profession in general, to consider whether it might be a good profession for me.

2. I am presently a live-in assistant at L'Arche Cape Breton (an intentional community for adults with mental disabilities). Playing instruments, singing, and dancing are a big part of how I share life with the folks with disabilities; I am hoping that a good resource book would add to my bag of tricks, and give me some good ideas for therapeutic musical activities that we can do right away.

So if you can suggest a title/author it would be helpful. I'm really not sure if I would want a general music therapy book or one specifically about working with people with mental disabilities; it depends on the options I find out there.

And if anyone has a book they want to sell or give me, we'll talk about that too.

thanks,

Marion

The best book I have come across on working with adults with learning disabilities is

'Learning to Listen'

By Herb Lovett.

Sorry I can't offer much on msic therapy generally - I'll be watching this space too.

Hi, Marion,

One of the best threads ever was Musc Therapy which was followed by a Music Therapy II. If you type in "music therpy" in the filter box and set the date to 3 years they will all come up.

I don't remember if any specific books were listed, but there is a bunch of info with anecdotal stories, too, of other Mudcatters weorking in similar situations.

You could also probably find some good information at www.musictherapy.org.

This is a great subject for a thread. Thanks for starting it!

I can only wcho what kat said about those threads.

Additionally though, you might want to PM a couple of specific 'Catters regarding your interest. "Musicman" and "Night Owl" (Paul and Jackie) both know the field well and are great folks to boot.

So glad to hear that wcho
Of my terrible trippin' typos
I've got the dyslexic fingers blues
Though, that's probably not news!

Oh the crossed finger blues
Oh the crossed finger blues
If ya want the therapy, watch out!
For those crossed finger blues!

'Wcho" is "echo" with your finger on the W instead of the E key. I've occasionally typed entire lines of gibberish because one hand had moved over a key.
