It occurs to me that it might be a sensible idea for those of us this side of the pond to start a HearMe session at an earlier time.

Not to exclude our Transatlantic brethren, but more for the sake of those of us who have to get up for work the next day and/or don't suffer from chronic insomnia!!

What think ye?

Well, since I have off for the next 2 weeks, something that better accomodates our European buddies is cool, and I can join in. Whenever you want to go, just put up the thread! Chances are I'll be there!

It would be nice, for those of us still Stateside, if you'd post your intention to have one sometime during the day that you are going to have it in the evening, so that we have the chance to set an alarm and get up in the middle of the night if we want to, which many of us will!

It's a brilliant idea, Alan! If you could post your intended time to get together (perhaps in 'Mudcat' time and/or GMT), I know that I would be willing to set the alarm to join in!

Actually, unless they plan on doing the HearMe in the early morning there, we won't have to set our alarms for nothing.

I've just got in from a brilliant night with Noreen, Bernard, John J and wendy and the locals from my favourite folk club.

It was one of the best nights I've ever had! (Bernard has taken photos and is putting them 'on the net' ooh, wherever can he mean?) Separate thread about this.

The point is, I would love to do a hearme NOW, but tis not possible - its far too late. (2.15am here and there's work tomorrow!) and 'im indoors is saying I should be sleeping... he's probably right.

So, my vote is a great big YES for a european hearme time. I suggest 7.30pm friday or satrdays (GMT).

Watcha think?

Catrin

I imagine that one of these days, there will be a 'place' where we just go when we have a notion to sing or listen..with enough members, it can run almost 24 hrs a day and a simple glance at the list will tell you if your friends are there. As it is, it has been too much focused on "Mudcat time".i.e., USA eastern...As rates come down in Europe and technology gets better, we will have all sorts of possibilities open..including parallel forums where, like a festival or a big house, different sessions are going on in different areas...run over here and do a ballad, then there and sing one you wrote...then on to a mini-concert by someone...

Just musing...but also a prediction!...Who'd a thunk 2 years ago, we'd have HearMe?

Go for it, you folk in Europe!..I'll come listen when I can

Well Bill, the Hearme side is already in place for 24 hour a day sessions and Aine's site is already geared for more than one room. The only thing missing has been getting the European side involved at a time suitable for them.

Alan's suggestion has been made before, usually under the name of a UK Hearme, but so far nothing has taken off. I suspect that one of the reasons has been the cost of internet acess over here but there are so many unmetered deals available (at least in the UK) that this should no longer be an obstacle. The deal I have costs me an extra œ5 a month on top of my standard phone rental for 24/7 unmetered access which is less than it cost me previously just to check emails and read and post to forums a couple of times a day.

well I'm up for it........although I do have chronic insomnia, it would be lovely to be able to sing without whispering and 7.30 Fridays or Saturdays would suit me most weeks.......( I don't have a life either,Bron) :)Maybe both if enough people are interested since many people go out one or other but not both? Can we start this Friday?

What technology do you need for Hearme ? Is it as simple as an internet connection, a soundcard and mic. Oh and speakers !!

I have stopped in at the Song Circle at odd times around the clock. With the exception of a time or two, someone always shows up within five or ten minutes, and the next thing you know, we've got a session going. Try it.

I think Mbo has set the record for the most hours logged in by far.

I am certain that Mbo has that record and by a long way. One thing that has not been mentioned and on reflection, I should have said in a couple of threads is Mbo's contribution towards making the Hearme session into a reality has been immense and I feel has been underestimated by many.

He has regularly been the one who has made a post that has got others in and has done a tremendous ammount of filling in the quiet patches to keep the music going.

I seem to have started something here.

As to Matt (Mbo), I fifth it (try saying that with a mouth full of sandwich)

Unless drowned in a wave of protest, I will post tonight the suggested Friday and Saturday sessions for 1930 BST (1430 Mudcat). Alas, I myself won't be there, as I'm playing at the Rayleigh Arms in Terling, Chelmsford, Essex, UK on Friday - anyone in the vicinity welcome. On Saturday I go away for a few days in Devon (Salcombe Regatta) and the Lady Elizabeth says if I take a computer, she will do me a mischief with it! So I'll just have to take two guitars instead.

Alan - I can identify with that. I too am off out tonight and away on holiday on Sat. morning. I'll bet there's enough of an interest for people to start a HearMe without the lack of our dulcit tones making that much difference. LOL

BTW my PC is seriously getting between me and my partner -I too, have been banned from taking it on holiday, entering a cybercafe, library or anywhere where there might be a hint of internet access.

How to cope with the withdrawl though....

Catrin

Mbo is an incredible asset to the HearMe sessions, and I know I look forward to hearing the enrgy of his songs after a day in the office. He's also continued to be a live contirbuting presence despite taking completely unwarrented flak and flames for "hogging" the sessions.

I was in Hearme with Alan Francis yesterday afternoon (for me) He played two instrutments I had never heard before. The Bowed Psaltry, and I already forget what the other one was.

Alan would you mind telling me again. It was real enjoyable, wish more people had been there.

The only time I heard Hear Me it sounded great
Unfortunately my internet connection is rubbish (could you send details of yours John F.)
And I have to go to bed early or I end up growling at people the next day
So any reasonable UK hour would let me hear all these things I only read about at present. friday/saturday night would be great and I might get to hear Mbo at last and Catrin.

If you do it on the weekend, can I come and play too? I was fortunate enough to get one of Mbo's tapes so I have him 24 hours a day if I choose. Hate to admit this but ...is 1430 Mudcat time 2:30 in the afternoon?

Yes, it is Mary. UK is approximately 5 hours ahead of Mudcat. I have a great world time clock thingie which Alison in Oz sent to me; really handy for figuring out these things. If you or anyone else would like a copy emailed to them, please let me know.

Those times would be great for me, too, esp. Saturday. I will look for you all staring Friday. It's really nice to see so many of you going for this.

Apparently there are music people all over using HearMe. A friend and I mixed up the name we'd agreed to for a private room in there one day. While I was waiting, my friend wound up in a different room full of East Indians singing their trad music! Kind of neat, thinking of musicians all over singing and playing to one another like we are!

The other instrument was a baclama, a mini bouzouki. It's Greek, but I've never seen one in Greece, except hung on a wall. Mine was made in Italy and I bought it in Malta.

I also possess what I believe is the only Majorca made Appalachian Dulcimer.

Oh, and my psaltery was made out of bits of an old wardrobe and the bottom of a ferret cage. True!!

See new posting for Friday and Saturday HearMe.

Could some Highly Trained Mutant Language specialist add a clicky for me?

I shall return

Roger, I am using the World Online Freedom 24 deal which I was switched over to when Woldonline took over Loacaltel. Details can be found at http://www.worldonline.co.uk/freedom/. I would shop around before making any desicions and I must say that I have not been entirely satisfied with the service provided. I have experienced periods of up to 2 weeks where it has taken me an average of 15 attempts to achieve a connection and my the service seems to get congested with traffic from say 7pm to 11pm although I have not failed to connect to and use Hearme within that period. I can be fairly sure that the fault lies with this ISP my other ISP (FreeUK - free but pay for local phone calls) seems to manage to offer reasonale speeds while Wold Online is being sluggish.

kat, how did you end up doing that and what site were you using to get there?

Jon
