Subject: Folk music in Providence RI in Sept? From: GUEST,Mark Cohen Date: 02 Aug 00 - 02:53 AM I'm going to be in Providence, Rhode Island September 21-25 for a course on hypnotherapy in children. Does anyone know of any song circles or music events going on in the area at that time? Had a great time in Denver in June with the help of some 'Catters, so I'm hoping some of you folks can come through again. Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Folk music in Providence RI in Sept? From: Bud Savoie Date: 02 Aug 00 - 07:15 AM Hey, Mark. We have the jam that takes place every second and fourth Wednesday evening at the AS220 Club in Providence, just down the street from the library. My friend Matt has a website that I'll get the address of to you when I can look it up. Welcome! |
Subject: RE: Folk music in Providence RI in Sept? From: Bud Savoie Date: 02 Aug 00 - 07:37 AM Here it is, Mark: http://members.home.net/mmcconeghy. By the way, don't let the "slow jam" label fool you. You'll love it. For the last couple of months we are meeting at Hazel Dene in Warren on the first & third Wednesdays. It's an outdoor, down-by-the-sea, countrified venue, and I am not sure whether we will still be doing it in September. |
Subject: RE: Folk music in Providence RI in Sept? From: Pinetop Slim Date: 02 Aug 00 - 10:21 AM On Saturday, Sept. 23, Stone Soup Coffeehouse will have some kind of a show at the Slater Mill in Pawtucket, just a couple miles out of Providence, and it's bound to be good (last year at this time, Rosalie Sorrels was the feature), but they don't have all of this year's schedule up yet. Looks like you'll miss the Slow Jam on Sept. 20 at AS220, but there's some kind of entertainment every night. It's an old dive converted into a cultural center -- if you like comfortable funkiness, it's not to be missed. There should be some Irish music in Pawtucket, Warren, Bristol or Barrington, R.I. (and nothing's far apart in Rhody)and Boston's just an hour away with a rich musical menu. Common Fence Point Coffeehouse and Four Corners Art Center in Tiverton, R.I., may also have something good going on. Circle of Friends Coffeehouse in Franklin, MA, is just a half-hour away, but I can't remember if they're on the first, second, third or fourth Saturday. Bud: Were you at the Slow Jam when a guy with a dulcimer played Over the Waterfall and messed it up terribly? That's me. I try not to let such embarrassments get to me, so I'll probably see you again some time. |

Subject: RE: Folk music in Providence RI in Sept? From: Bud Savoie Date: 02 Aug 00 - 06:25 PM Mark, nobody messes up at a jam. I don't remember your messing anything up, and I know no one gave you dirty looks or anything like that. Come on back! And the rest of you Southern New Englanders, keep the info on gigs coming. There's a heck of a lot of folk music around here. |
Subject: RE: Folk music in Providence RI in Sept? From: Alice Date: 02 Aug 00 - 08:28 PM I'm sending this info to my neice Brigid Flynn in Providence. If any of you meet her at a jam, tell her "hi" from her aunt Alice in Montana. |
Subject: RE: Folk music in Providence RI in Sept? From: GUEST,Barry Finn Date: 02 Aug 00 - 09:26 PM Hi Mark, if this isn't enough for your weekend then a 1/2 hour to the north the Boston Folk Festival will be in full swing ( http://www.wumb.org/folkfest/ ) the line up is a killer. You just can't come close to Boston without getting into the music up to your ears (are you reading this Moonchild). If you do come up keep us posted maybe we can hook up. 2 others sources of good music are the Thrus. edition of the Boston Globe's calendar section & Billy Hocket's conflict calendar. Good luck Bra, Barry |
Subject: RE: Folk music in Providence RI in Sept? From: GUEST,Mark Cohen Date: 05 Aug 00 - 06:07 PM Thanks, guys, I knew you would come through. This is one thing I miss about the Mainland...all the music!! Bud, I actually fly into Boston on the 20th, so I should be able to make the jam that night -- will have to borrow a guitar, though, unless you folks let singers in too! I will be in Providence from the 21st to the 25th, then will drive up to visit with my sister and her family in Lexington, spend the holiday with them and fly back to paradise on the 1st. (I know, New England in the fall comes awfully close!) So Barry et al, I hope to catch you during my week in Lexington. I expect my days in Providence will be pretty full, but I hope the evenings will be free and some of those events sound great. Perhaps I'll be able to convince some of my fellow future hypnotherapists to come along. (Maybe we can practice on Mark and get him to play a perfect set!) I'm much more of a singer than a jammer, so the slow jam would probably be about right, but I do enjoy playing backup guitar to old-time fiddle tunes, and haven't done that for about 10 years. Hey, folks, thanks, this will be great! Looking forward to meeting all you New England 'Catters. Mahalo and aloha Mark |
