Does anyone remember those songs? I'm talkin' classics here like... Maverick, Cheyene, Wagon Train, Sugarfoot, The Lawman, Johnny Yuma(The Rebel), The Rifleman ,Bonanza Bat Masterson, Paladin, Wanted Dead Or Alive, Rawhide.... etc...etc..

Yeah Mac, Guy Van Duser did The Great Western Medley on his nylon string. It was on one of his early albums (may have been his first) and it included many of the great tunes you mention.

Les B put together a set of theme songs from tv westerns. We were singing some of them with bill and Allan when they were out here on their Mudcat road trip. Maybe Les will see this thread. We went through the list of Johnny Yuma, Paladin, Maverick, Bonanza, Rawhide, ... anyone remember Wagon Train? Check this out...TV Westerns.

Didn't Sugarfoot start out as Tenderfoot or is my senile mind playing tricks on me ?
The only one other than Bonanza above I can remember (I'm sure I'd know them if I heard them though) is Champion the Wonder Horse (now I've typed that I can remember Mr. Ed as well) although that doesn't strictly meet the criteria, but it is bit horsey.
I'm looking forward to hearing some old forgotten favourites again.

Slight thread creep: In one John Wayne cavalry/Indians movie, I think She Wore a Yellow Ribbon? For Apache? Anyway, the soldiers sing The Bold Fenian Men to their leader. This was parodied in a Lucky Luke (the French comic strip about the Ancient West) - whose tag line was L'Homme Qui Tire Plus Vite Que Son Ombre (with the back of the books having him outshooting his shadow)...

I have a great 4-CD set from Rhino records that has tons of Western TN and movie music. I am a Bonanza nut although I never get to see it anymore because I don't have cable and there's only 1 network station here that airs it at a time when I'm rarely around. My favorite western movie music, though, is Magnificent Seven.

OK, can you give me a bit of "Wyatt Earp"? Was part of it "brave courageous and bold"?

Funny thing but none of the songs had the word "pimp" in them, but quite a few of the Western heroes had that as a sideline.

The only Western I really ever watched was one that was on in the late 80's (I was only a little kid then) and it was about 4 cowboys who get struck by lightening and get transported through time to Modern-day Los Angeles. It was pretty cool...but they cancelled it.

Yeah Mary...I remember Texas John....Which makes me think of a funny spoof western I only saw ONCE and its been driving me nuts ever since. The thing was so funny I was LITERALLY on the floor at times. IT was called "Evil Roy Slade" and starred John Astin (who breaks me up when he just stands there) and to my knowledge it never aired again. It was like a 2 hour made for TV movie. Its a twist on the Jungle Book stories....he was raised by buzzards and there is a scene with Astin in a cowboy hat, boots, and a diaper talking to the buzzards that's worht the whole thing.

I don't remember "Sky King" having a song associated with it, just that opening......."Out of the blue of the western sky comes......sswwwooooooshhhhvvaarrrrooooommm.....SKY KING!!!"

LOL thosp.......Yeah, as a kid, my entire knowledge of Canada was limited to Sgt. Preston and noticing that they had funny cars that looked like Pontiacs with Chevy emblems called Acadians. And of course they had that funny looking money too, and a lake that said "Nipissing" which I thought funnier than hell.

Now I'm more enlightened and know its the birthplace of Neil Young.

And if Sky King fits this, what about "Fury" with "Pete, who cut his teeth on a branding iron"? I don't know why I remember this crap. I always wanted to watch "Ding Dong School" (no Spaw, don't say it) and "Magic Cottage" but I was outvoted by 4 brothers.

Sugarfoot
The show: Tom Brewster was a peculiar western hero. He liked reading books, hated violence, and was terrible in gunfights (he could barely even shoot straight). In fact, he was so inept at traditional cowboy things that other cowboys had to invent a new term to describe him - "sugarfoot", one step lower than the lowly "tenderfoot". Brewster was an educated Easterner who was studying law with a correspondence school. He travelled west in the 1860s, full of dreams about the romance of the wild west, but kept finding trouble instead of adventure. And since he wasn't too handy with six-guns, all he could do was try to bluff his way out of dangerous situations. This method often flabbergasted his enemies. On the first episode of the show, for example, one villan (played by Dennis Hopper) asked him: "Whaddya tryin' to do, talk me to death?" And he was!

The explanation for the twenty verses comes from using the tune to intro each segment of the series as Davy's "life" unfolded, hence verses about the Alamo, going to Washington, and even a few on Mike Fink. There was another Mike fink song as well as a song about Davy's gun, "Bang! Goes ol' Betsy."

Does anybody remember a show "Branded"? I seem to recall the opening titles were an officer being "drummed out" of a military (presumably ACW)unit, buttons off, shoulder straps off, broken sword, the lot. (IIRC the gimmick was that he kept the sword cut doen as a bowie knife).
