One of my favorites is "Spoon River"....

Come to the dance, Sally Perkins
I like you quite well
The Union's preserved now, just listen
you can hear every bell
there must be a heaven
'cause, God knows, I've seen only hell
my rig is outside
come and ride through the morning
here in Spoon River

by the way... does anyone know the origin of the "Homecoming" tradition? Was it started after the Civil War?

what is the tradition of homecoming?

I see it used in American football terms (you know the teams been off playing a series of road games, and when they come home it's a big game and a big party, etc) ... but that doesn't sound like what you're refering to here?

I always figured a "homecoming" was a celebration of welcome after a period of time away....never thought it "began" at any particular time....though I would guess the prodigal son started it all....

"Rollin' Home" "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" and its variations. "The Banks of the Wabash"

Am I on the right track?

I'm told that there was a great "homecoming" in the fall of 1865. Small towns, all across our country were celebrating the return of their young men from the Civil War.

Much of the suffering appeared over,Lincoln had recently been assasinated but even that seemed to punctuate the end of one time and the start of another.

Just picture the journey home for those boys, many of them still teenagers, often traveling on foot to celebrate and perhaps dance again, at the homecoming.....

.. at the risk of acting with shameless self promotion, this link will take you to the lyrics for a "the war has ended, come back to me arms" song. The back button will take you to a sound file sample.

Some weren't celebrating:
You haven't an arm
You haven't a leg
You're an eyeless boneless chickenless egg
We will set you out on a corner to beg.
Johnny, I hardly knew ya.
