Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Circle round the sun From: Mountain Dog Date: 29 Jul 97 - 08:23 AM Dear Strizzolo, Are you thinking of "Stealin", a blues standard that includes the line: "Put your arms around me like a circle round the sun..."? Let me know. And welcome to DT and The Mudcat Cafe! |
Subject: Lyr Add: CIRCLE 'ROUND THE SUN (James Taylor) From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Jul 97 - 10:26 AM Hi, Strizzolo - another similar song is "Circle of the Sun," by Sally Rogers. "Babies are born in the circle of the sun...." "Stealin'" and "Circle of the Sun" are in the Digital Tradition database, but I suppose the one you want is the 1969 James Taylor song. CIRCLE 'ROUND THE SUN (James Taylor, 1969) O I love my baby and she's bound to love me some.(twice) Well she throws her arms around me just like a circle 'round the sun. I lay down last night, I was trying to take my rest (twice) But my thoughts they just kept wanderin' like them wild geese in the west. Now I know that sunrise, it's gonna shine in my backyard someday. (twice) And that wind's just bound to rise up, gonna blow, blow all my blues away. Is that the song you wanted? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Circle round the sun From: Jon W. Date: 29 Jul 97 - 11:45 AM I am familiar with the "circle round the sun" line from one blues tune by Taj Mahal, and the two other James Taylor verses are traditional blues and have been included in countless songs. More information may help us narrow it down. Buona fortuna, Strizzolo. Ciao. |

Sun's gonna shine on my backdoor someday |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Circle round the sun From: Philippa Date: 06 Nov 98 - 03:05 PM The lines others have offered aren't quite the ones I think of when I hear "Circle round the sun" Something like:
Put your arms around me, baby
You don't believe I love you,
And I'm stealing, stealing, --It's an old blues song, but I think Arlo Guthrie recorded it too. As suggested, it's probably on the DT under the title "Stealing.” So let us all know which of the various suggested Circles round the sun is your orbit. |

Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Circle round the sun From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Dec 08 - 12:34 PM CIRCLE ROUND THE SUN (excerpt, from several sound samples) Chris While ...different way of simply stopping trying. Death is just a place for us to start. One battle may be over; one more may be in sight, And we put off till tomorrow what we fear to do tonight, But we fight until we're broken and we love until we fall, Always turning, forever turning, And we circle round the sun, And we circle round the sun, And we circle round the sun Until we're done.... [Recorded by The Albion Band on "Demi Paradise" (1996) and "Acoustic Years 1993-1997" (1997). Chris While was a member of The Albion Band, so I suspect that MIGHT be her voice on the Albion recording. Chris While and Julie Matthews (also a member of Albion) also recorded the song on their own album "Stages" (2000), but I didn't find a sound sample of that recording. While and Matthews are also members of Daphne's Flight, who recorded this song on their album "Daphne's Flight" (1996).] * CIRCLE ROUND THE SUN (excerpt, from a sound sample) Gerry Goffin and Carole King ...'bout to love me some, yeah, God knows, Yeah, she 'bout to love me some. (Why, man?) Because she throwed her arms around me jus' like a circle.... [Recorded by Walter Allen on "Blues Town Story, Vol. 2" (1998).] * There are several other songs with the same title, but I don't see any evidence that Richard and Linda Thompson recorded one. |

Subject: Lyr Add: CIRCLE ROUND THE SUN (Chris While) From: GUEST,Rob Norman Date: 29 Sep 09 - 09:08 PM ... it's the longest running thread You just never know do you. Here's the complete lyric for the song for lemonade lady From my view the best song with that title (and there's a few) CIRCLE ROUND THE SUN Albion Band, Daphne's Flight Chris While One battle may be over. one more may be in sight, And we put off 'till tomorrow what we fear to do tonight, But we fight until we're broken and we love until we fall, Always turning, forever turning, And we circle round the sun, and we circle round the sun, And we circle round the sun until we're done. And we cast a loving eye to the grass that's always greener, And launch to take the land that's greener still, And we follow one who's stronger even where we don't agree, And we struggle to perform against our will. We brave the 9 to 5 to pay for mortgages and cars, And we spend an earthly fortune to fly a man to Mars, And we laugh until we cry and then we cry ourselves to sleep, Always turning, forever turning, And we circle round the sun, and we circle round the sun, And we circle round the sun until we're done. So the human race move forward, destination God-knows-where, While the planet slowly spins the hands of time, And we long for inner peace while we search for outer space, And undiscovered mountains still to climb, Aah, the star we pray in circles are the signs that bring them rain. We watch them by a satellite and we turn our heads in shame, And we yearn for new beginnings while we dread the final end, Always turning, forever turning, And we circle round the sun, and we circle round the sun, And we circle round the sun until we're done. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Circle Round the Sun From: alanabit Date: 30 Sep 09 - 12:42 AM It is also the last line of Steamhammer's "Junior's Wailing". Love me baby, Love me when I'm down Love me baby, Always be around Throw your arms around me like a circle round the sun Love me baby, like we've only just begun Why write a new line when the old ones will do? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Circle Round the Sun From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 30 Sep 09 - 09:30 PM "Circle Round the Sun" is a late version of "I Know You Rider," which goes back to a Lomax field recording. If you're interested in its origins (as "Woman Blue") and its introduction to folk circles in the 1950s, those are explored in the following thread: http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=40592#2293997 I promise you, it's had a long strange trip. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Circle Round the Sun From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 07 Oct 09 - 03:26 PM A circle round the sun means the air is loaded with ice crystals to cause the refraction(?) and it's cold, cold, cold. Don't see them too often anymore here in Alberta; global warming? I can't appreciate these songs. The mere mention of them makes me shiver. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Circle Round the Sun From: GUEST,Avi Goldstein Date: 17 Jun 10 - 08:37 AM I don't know if anyone is still reading this thread, but if yes, can you explain the following: Last night my wife and I saw Carole King and James Taylor (wonderful concert, if you can catch it, go!). This led me to wolfgangsvault, which features free old concerts, to a performance by James with Carole in 1970. I immediately recognized the lyrics of Circle Round the Sun from the Dead's interpretation of I Know You Rider. Whereas the song is traditional, I guess one can "steal" the lyrics and retitle the song, but is this considered acceptable, and has it been done often? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Circle Round the Sun From: the lemonade lady Date: 23 Jun 10 - 06:02 PM I'm still reading it. What an interesting observation. S |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Circle Round the Sun From: GUEST,person Date: 11 Jan 11 - 10:55 PM To Avi: Yes absolutely! Song lyrics are always stolen (or borrowed) especially in blues and folk. Its possible to play simple chords and sing simple melodies (which have appeared in a million other songs before) and to take "standard" lines which appear in many songs (such as the arms like the circle around the sun) to create a "new" song. Other such lyrics include things like "if you dont want my peaches dont shake my tree" and the notion of a rocking chair by a river rocking the blues away. And tons more. |
