Subject: Boston in November, what's happening?
From: GUEST,Ewan McVicar

I lived and taught guitar in Cambridge Mass for a couple of years, 1966/7. I've coming back for the first time since then in November, 14th to 21st. What's worth knowing about / hearing / where these days? All advice gratefully received. I'll be staying with folkie friends in Allston.

Bedamn. I was there then. Last year of Law School at BU. Graduated June '67 and went to VT.

Used to go to the Club 47 whenever Charles River Valley Boys or Tom Rush or Dick and Mimi Farina or Keith and Rooney were playing.

I guess there's still a "folk" club in that same exact location, called Passim, but it's pretty much given over to Sensitive Young Singer-Songwriters.

There's Irish sessions every night, singing sessions a couple of nights a week, at least one old timey weekly, dozens of open mikes, coffeehouses sprouting out of the ground, concerts constantly. That far in advance your best bet is to try Billy Hocket's calender at ( http://www.music-for-robin.org/ ). The Boston Globe's Thursday edition has a calendar that has a great list of area folk music. The Irish Emmigrant has a good listing on the Irish music scene, the Boston Folk Song Society puts out a monthly calender. Hope we can meet up for some music. Let me know your musical flavor & I'll keep an eye open for you. Barry

Passim's is still there & you're right Peter, it's very much a singer/songwriter venue since the it came under new guidingship, though I hear tell that Peter Johnson is trying to revive a folk singers night there, the kind he used to host back in the 70's & 80's. Barry

Ewan,

My name is Debra Cowan and I am a friend of Christine Kydd's. I lived in Edinburgh for a bit and would love to meet up with you when you are here. I live in Westborough just outside of Boston. We would love to have you come to our singer's club at Paddy Burke's (I cannot believe Barry did not mention it!) on Wednesday nights.

BTW-I sing your song "All the Tunes in the World". I love singing it and people enjoy hearing it.

Cheers, Debra

Midchuck

My fondest memories of the Club 47 were gigs by Grandpa Jones and by the Incredible String Band. I still cherish my album of the Charles River Valley Boys play Beatles song, and my Dick and Mimi album. I lived round the corner from the Square in Jack Parmley's string shop at 45 1/2 Mount Auburn Street.

Barry

The above begins to indicate the range of my musical tastes. I've played in an old timey band, in my time been noted as a blues performer, toured Finland playing guitar and singing with a proto-Irish group, drummed and played banjo with an Ewe Ghanaian ensemble, written various songs in Scots trad style which have been recorded by others, been rated as a ballad singer, etc. Nowadays I mostly work as a storyteller, plus teaching schoolkids about traditional Scots music and song, and how to write new songs based on old ones.

Debra

Christine crashed on the spare bed one night last week. Linda and I visited her cottage in Kirrie last month - actual roses round the door! She is getting the hang of semi-regular hours in her new job in the Tolbooth, Stirling, thought the travelling is hard from Kirriemuir. I'd be so delighted to visit and sing. I'm only over for a week (14th to 21st) so it would need to be on Wednesday 15th November.

Best Regards to all

Ewan

(Sorry if all the above text gets jammed into one block. I never understand why my postings here do not include linebreaks. I know there is a way, but I've forgotten what it is!)

Debra I'll tell herself. The offer of help with transportation is great, many thanks. Contact me direct at (click to e-mail).

[Joe is not keen for us to put email addresses on, as they get hoovered up by junk mail merchants, but I don't mind that}.

Animaterra

I'll do as you ask.

Ewan

Ayup. Just trying to protect you, Ewan. You did me one better, though - you put your e-mail address in angle brackets, which makes it invisible. I changed it to a clicky. I should be in Boston at the same time. Maybe we'll figure out a way to get together?

Ewan, Animaterra & DebC, if this is going to turn into a NH meet it may make more sense to have it at my house (then I won't have to travel, heh, heh), & maybe some of the NH coasters & Boston locals could join in too? Toss it around & see what you think. Animaterra would this (Derry) be to long of a haul for you? Barry

Well, well, well. This could get interesting.

Ewan, you never gave an email addy. If you could give it to me in a private message that would be great. Or you can get my email from from Christine.

I think a NH gathering at Mr. Finn's would be fine. Is Mrs. Finn and the wee Finnlets aware that they are about to be overrun with Mudcatters?

This will be fun!

Debra

The wee Finnlets & Mrs (who are gone for a few days, with the dog) aren't aware yet (still have to hear from Ewan & Animaterra), they just love to come home to surprises specially musical ones(I keep telling them that they do). By then I may just have the walls pushed out & that would call for a party of course falling down or breathing over a long period of time calls for a party too. Barry

Looks like my email address got hoovered up double quick. I'll put it again here, then also try a private message.

EwanMcVicar@compuserve.com

The trip to NH becomes more interesting by the minute. I've an email from Animaterra that I need to look at next.

Barry

Who could resist such a suggestion? Certainly not me!!! To quote someone, we can work it out.

Regards

Ewan

Looks like I'd need to sign up as a member again to be able to send you a private message, and I've taken against doing that, but my email address is there this time. (Last time I put it in those pointy brackets <> - seems to be a bad move.)

Ewan; it will be great to have you attend the singers' club sessiun on the 15th! Not sure if I can make it to this NH thing as I do not have a car but it sure sounds like you will all have a fabulous time. Maybe I will see/hear you on November 15,

cheers,

Peg

Barry and Deb

I'm much obliged to you guys. This is a great idea, and neatly fits in with my friends' plans - they are to be away over that weekend, leaving me to my own impulses!

Deb, I'm mightily in need of a lift, the thought of driving in the US gives me goosebumps, and I'd no thought to hire a car anyway,.

I and Linda are just back from an exhausting but exhilarating race round Ireland to see the famous sights. The place was hotching with music, of course.

Hey, you guys, set a date and I'll see if I can make it, too. I'll be visiting my sister in Duxbury, Mass. Vegetarian Thanksgiving dinner.
Can anybody sneak some turkey to me?

No problem, Joe. I am in Westborough (not sure how far from Duxbury that is). We always have more than we can handle as my in-laws are vegetarians but they have turkey for those of us "on the dark side". Heehee.

Ewan-No problem with a lift up to Master Finn's. The thought of driving in the UK used to give me goosebumps until Bob Copper taught me how to drive on the correct side of the road in East Sussex. Now that was an experience. Of course, I was doing the driving, not Bob. He just sat in passenger seat, white-knuckled saying, "Give way on the right, Debra, give way on the right."

Ewan, did you receive my email? I'll re-send if you did not.

Barry, maybe I'll see you tonight at Paddy Burke's.

Debra

How did that happen? Clearly I hit a wrong button [not once but twice], but I cannot very well find out which one experimentally, now can I?

Debra, I fear on reflection that in the pre-trip melee I did not acknowledge your email.

True apologies.

Saturday, Nov. 18th it is then. I guess time can be worked on later but when it comes to a music bash here it's usually a start around noon or so & goes till the last one standing. Probably be to cold by then to put a pig on a spit but with this much time on my hands I'm sure to come up with some tasty ideas. I'll figure out how to send directions & a map to any who'll e-mail me for it (still a guest so I can't do the message thing. I'll post my phone# & addy to this thread as time gets closer. Those that find it a bit difficult to hook up a ride (Peg) let me know & I'll try matching you with someone. There's not a lot of bed space but there's a good deal of floor room for those that want to try & outlast some of us older night owls. Hope to see & hear as many muddcatter's as want & can make it along with some others that'll be looking for a place to kick back & make music. Barry
