Subject: Lyr Add: HENRY MARTIN^^^ From: Little Hawk Date: 15 Aug 00 - 06:53 PM The most classic pirate song I know is Henry Martin, but there must be some others. Who's got one? HENRY MARTIN There were three brothers in merry Scotland In Scotland there lived brothers three And they did cast lots which of them should go, should go, should go For to turn robber all on the salt sea The lot it fell first upon Henry Martin The youngest of all the three That he should turn robber all on the salt sea For to maintain his two brothers and he He had not been sailing but a long winter's night And part of a short winter's day When he espied a rich lofty ship Come a bibing down him straight away Hello, hello, cried Henry Martin What makes you sail so high I'm a rich merchant ship bound for fair London town Won't you please for to let me pass by O no, o no, cried henry martin That thing it never can be For I have turned robber all on the salt sea For to maintain my two brothers and me So lower your topsail and bail up your mizzen Bring yourself under my lee Or I shall give you a fast flowing ball And your dear bodies drown in the salt sea Then broadside and broadside and at it they went For fully two hours or three Til Henry Martin gave to her the death shot Heavily listing to starboard went she The rich merchant vessel was wounded full sore Straight to the bottom went she And Henry Martin sailed away ... on the salt sea Sad news, sad news to old England came Sad news to fair London town There was a rich vessel and she's cast away And all of her merry men drowned Child #250 @sailor @Scots @English @pirate filename[ HENRMART Tune file : HENRMART |

Subject: RE: Wanted: songs about pirates From: Bill Hahn//\\ Date: 15 Aug 00 - 07:35 PM Well, if we leave the folk world for a moment we should certainly listen to The Pirate King from The Pirates of Penzance. With Catlike Tread is also a winner----think Hail Hail the Gangs all Here. But---stick to D'Oyly Carte versions---the new bowdlerzied versions are really quite bad. The Weavers, back in the 50s, had a version of She Had A Dark And Roving Eye---sort of pirate oriented. Not much though. There must be afew songs about LaFitte(spelling)/ Bill H

Subject: RE: Wanted: songs about pirates From: Stewie Date: 15 Aug 00 - 07:43 PM 'Andrew Bardine', a New England variant of 'Henry Martin', is a good'un. It ends with Andrew Bardine's defiant boast to Captain Charles Stuart:
Go home, go home, says Andrew Bardine I have it on Ed McCurdy's 'Treasure Chest of American Folk Song', but no doubt versions have been recorded elsewhere. --Stewie.

Subject: RE: Wanted: songs about pirates From: Margo Date: 16 Aug 00 - 01:40 AM There is a wonderful song about how fun it is to be a pirate until.... then it lists verse by verse the bad things that can happen like losing body parts. Subject: RE: Wanted: songs about pirates From: GUEST Date: 16 Aug 00 - 11:46 AM hmmm.... Is "Fifteen Men on the Dead Man's Chest" from "Treasure Island" a real pirate shanty or did Stevenson just make it up? Håvard |
Subject: RE: Wanted: songs about pirates From: Susanne (skw) Date: 16 Aug 00 - 06:41 PM Midchuck - Bert Brecht wrote another pirate song, before the Threepenny Opera, I believe, which has just been recorded by a German folk band. It works very well. No songs, but the book 'Bold In Her Breeches. Women pirates across the ages', ed. by Jo Stanley, is absolutely wonderful. Not least, there is a long chapter on Granuaile, or Grace O'Malley. For music, try Shaun Davey's suite 'Granuaile'. - Susanne |

Subject: RE: songs about pirates From: Amos Date: 11 Jul 15 - 11:28 AM The Pirate's Song My boat's by the tower, my bark's on the bay Both must be gone by the dawn of the day The moon's in her shroud, and to light thee afar On the deck of the "Daring's" a love-lighted star CHORUS: So, wake, lady, wake, I'm waiting for thee On this night, or never, my bride thou shalt be Wake, lady, wake, I'm waiting for thee On this night or never my bride thou shalt be Forgive my rough mood, unaccustomed to sue I woo not, perhaps, as the landlubbers do For my voice is attuned to the sound of the gun Which startles the deep when the combat's begun Oh, islands there are on the face of the deep Where the leaves never fade and the skies never weep So haste, love, make haste, while the fair breezes blow And an ocean bird poses on pinions of snow A hundred shall serve, the best of the brave, The chief of a thousand shall kneel as thy slave And thou shalt reign queen, and our empire shall last 'Til the black flag, by inches, is torn from the mast |
Subject: RE: songs about pirates From: Amos Date: 11 Jul 15 - 11:30 AM The Pirate Song To the mast nail our flag it is dark as the grave, Or the death which it bears while it sweeps o'er the wave; Let our deck clear for action, our guns be prepared; Be the boarding-axe sharpened, the scimetar bared: Set the canisters ready, and then bring to me, For the last of my duties, the powder-room key. It shall never be lowered, the black flag we bear; If the sea be denied us, we sweep through the air. Unshared have we left our last victory's prey; It is mine to divide it, and yours to obey: There are shawls that might suit a sultana's white neck, And pearls that are fair as the arms they will deck. There are flasks which, unseal them, the air will disclose Diametta's fair summers, the home of the rose. I claim not a portion: I ask but as mine 'Tis to drink to our victory - one cup of red wine. Some fight, 'tis for riches - some fight, 'tis for fame: The first I despise, and the last is a name. I fight, 'tis for vengeance. I love to see flow, At the stroke of my sabre, the life of my foe. I strike for the memory of long-vanished years; I only shed blood where another shed tears, I come, as the lightning comes red from above, O'er the race that I loathe, to the battle I love. |

Subject: RE: songs about pirates From: CupOfTea Date: 13 Jul 15 - 04:46 PM My favorite Pirate songs is the wonderfully off-kilter Refrigerator Pirates done by the Smokin Fez Monkeys. That video is priceless, as "Rattletrap Jack Hokum" who wrote the song has moved on from the group, and "Bullfrog Willy Plunkett" (Tim Wallace) passed away last March. I'm sorry I never shared this with Art Theime, as it's a song I could have imagined him having a ball with as it's totally pun-saturated. With the blossoming of "Pyrate" festivals, there must be a bunch of songs geared to that Renfaire spin-off batch. I saw a group at a maritime festival who struck me as perfect for that venue, though they were more into bawdy songs, than pirates per se. Joanne in Cleveland |
