Subject: New to Mudcat/indroducing myself From: MichaelAnthony Date: 21 Aug 00 - 10:35 PM Hello all! I'm glad I happened upon this site. Not only is a well-functioning place, there seems to be a lot of good folks here. I'm very much into the idea of expressing oneself - art - through songs. My idea of folk music is adapting a song or writing a song that expresses one's current situation. What I like in recorded or performed music is "getting underneath" a song -- true expression or understanding of the music and lyrics. One favorite quote of mine is that Leadbelly said he play blues to "get out of them", to feel better. This seems right to me, to...not to be confused with the "getting underneath" business, which is more about an ability to propel the message. A current favorite of mine is Jesse Fuller, beyond San Franscico Bay Blues, which many have heard of. There's a recording of him playing his 12-string and homemade fotdella made at Good Time Jazz in LA, 1963. It's call SFB Blues. Anyone checked it out? I play guitar, learn others songs, and write some. I rather fond of early rock, too, like C Berry and B Holly, and the covers that the Beatles did. I hope I don't offend any purists by saying I really think Dylan did/does the folk thing right. Anyway, blah-blah-blah on me. Thanks for being around and making this a good site. I don't know many folks who "get" the folk thing the same way it comes to me. Michael |

Subject: RE: New to Mudcat/indroducing myself From: catspaw49 Date: 21 Aug 00 - 11:13 PM Welcome to the 'Cat Michael. Be sure to read the FAQ thread for newcomers. There is a Quick Links Box at the top with a pull down menu that will help you explore the place. Every thread is here that has been run in the past three and a half years. Feel free to run a forum search on names you see to get an idea of the joint and you can find pictures of many at "Mudcat Resources" in the quick Links. There is generally a nightly sing by using HearMe and you can find a thread with a blue clicky thing (hot link) that will take you there. There is Mudcat Radio on wednesday nights at 7 PM Eastern US and all the shows are archived if you want to go back and listen to any of them. There are over 8000 lyrics in the DT and many more on the threads and you can use the Search feature to find them. This is a great place populated by fine , intelligent, caring, and knowledgable people........I'm not one of them, but there are plenty around. Lots of good music and lots of good friends. Post wherever and whenever you want and if you have questions, feel free to ask....Somebody will be able to help. Spaw |

Subject: RE: New to Mudcat/indroducing myself From: MichaelAnthony Date: 22 Aug 00 - 10:56 AM Thanks for the warm welcome! This is quite a followed discussion! We must be all spread out and away from each other (I'm in Atlanta). A nice use of the internet. I'm yet to check out the suggested areas of Mudcat, but will soon. I'm kind of from North Carolina, too. I still go up fairly often, to Asheville, Charlotte, Kernersville. The fotdellas that Jesse Fuller used were fashioned from sawed-off acoustic basses and piano strings. I read that he had trouble keeping them working. That one recording I mentioned is really amazing, though. I like the idea of using the feet for accompanying oneself. (Recently tried miking something attached to the lower part of a highhat stand. May be able to get some good percussion with practice and experimenting, but so far the sound isn't quite nice enough. Suggestions welcome.) CarolC and Quincy, looks like we found a great place! Keep the hello's coming... MichaelAnthony |

Subject: RE: New to Mudcat/indroducing myself From: Jim the Bart Date: 22 Aug 00 - 12:30 PM Welcome from Chicago. Also a big fan of Buddy (contrary to what Don McLean said, the music didin't really die, just the conduit. Still, it was a great loss). Have you heard the Elvis Sun session recordings? That hillbilly cat cooked up a mess o' blues in those days. Enjoy the dance. Bart |
