Subject: No More Fish, No Fishermen From: Jeri Date: 24 Aug 00 - 12:30 PM I don't actually need the tune. I just wrote it out in MIDI to send to the DT. The words were written by Shelley Posen and set to a tune tune apparently composed by John Goss, according to this thread. I believe the tune is to a hymn, and there's at least one other modern song set to this tune. I can't find my Finest Kind CD with the song on. Now the question - does anyone know the name of the hymn? I'm asking because the tune file should probably be named after the original hymn, but I'm probably just being anal about it.) THANKS! |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: No More Fish, No Fishermen From: Jeri Date: 24 Aug 00 - 02:26 PM Hey Bert - BINGO! Thanks! Found the hymn at this Christmas carol website with words and a midi. (I'm still going to send my melody-only one in.) Apparently also known as "See Amid the Winter's Snow. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: No More Fish, No Fishermen From: Barbara Date: 24 Aug 00 - 02:28 PM Jeri, the CD notes say, "Shelley wrote this song about the recent calamitous demise of the 500 year old Newfoundland cod fishery. The song is modelled on "Coal, not Dole," Kay Sutcliffe's lament for the coal mining industry in Great Britain as sung by coope, Boyes and Simpson to the tune of the Victorian Christmas carol, "See Amid the Winter Snow". We should get together sometime, we seem to have an awful lot of the same taste in music. I have the words, do you need them, or are they already posted here somewhere? (I forget) Blessings, Barbara |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: No More Fish, No Fishermen From: Jeri Date: 24 Aug 00 - 02:39 PM Barbara, thanks for the information! The words are in the DT - I was just doing the tune up. I have the CD, but I'm afraid it's in that little pocket of space in the car that keeps phasing in and out of our own universe. :-) Barbara, re getting together - maybe the Getaway? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: No More Fish, No Fishermen From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Aug 00 - 03:25 PM Well, shoot - I went through all the effort of transcribing the song for this thread (click) three weeks ago, and Jeri points to a thread where Charlie Baum posted it a year ago. Oh, well. Take a look at this thread, too - it gives the tune and several other sets of lyrics that fit the tune. Tune and lyrics have already been submitted and harvested. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: No More Fish, No Fishermen From: Jeri Date: 24 Aug 00 - 05:42 PM Haha, Joe! I spent a good while transcribing the tune because I didn't see the thread you posted! The heck with it - I'm sending the MIDI anyway! (It's the melody line alone.) Uh, Joe - the song's in the DT. It's got little ears under it, which means some guy harvested it. ;-) |
