Subject: The Everly Brothers in Concert From: DonMeixner Date: 25 Aug 00 - 12:20 AM I attended a concert by The Brothers Wednesday nite. I am amazed that 60 year old voices can still sound so young and clear. Phil Everly is surely the God of Harmony voices. I attended with 4 of the guys in my band There is no doubt in my mind that when the Brothers mentioned the Bluesky Boys I was the only one in the place (1500) who said "Yeah!" My guys looked at me and stared. This is still the reunion band, Albert Lee and Buddy Eammons being the standouts. The piano man was wonderful as well. My daughter would thnk I was nuts to spend $35.00 to hear some old guys whose better days are behind them. I think they are just catching they're breath and the second set is just beginning. In both cases their intonation and phrasing are impeccable, even later in life. By the way, it is a distinct advantage to, in fact, be brothers because their dialect and accents are identical and this is very helpful in singing close harmony. Don't believe it? Imagine two guys singing harmony with one of them being brought up in Brooklyn, NY and the other in Montgomery, Alabama! |

I was too young the first time around, but got hooked on their singing after seeing a documentary on them shown on PBS in the 1970's. Didn't they have a bitter falling out for a long time? I vaguely remember the documentary pointing out that a fight broke out between them onstage one time. Well, that's obviously all in the past now. |

The difference in theses guys and other blood harmony acts is not in the harmony itself. I have seen them live, listened to records for years, seen them on TV, etc., for many years and I can never catch them not being absolutely together. Neither starts nor ends a note or a word even a nanosecond differently from the other. Tight doesn't begin to describe it. I'm always hopeful of catching them being a hair off, but it never seems to happen. Spaw |

And so I bought I every Everly Brothers album I could get my hands on. No small feat given that I earned my money baby sitting. When I discovered "Songs Our Daddy Taught Us", I was hooked on folk music forever. Still play it - LP and tapes. Still tear up over "Put My little Shoes Away". They tried to sing a few from the album at their reunion concert but realized very quickly that they were losing their audience. "Bye Bye Love" got a standing ovation. Oh well. |

The Beatles often expressly acknowledged their debt to the Everly brothers in creating their singing style. The effect of the Louvin Brothers on the Everly Brothers is obvious. Ergo: The Louvin brothers created modern rock. Now we know whom to blame - But Ira's dead. It's all Charlie Louvin's fault. Peter. |

Enjoy! Share your reactions if you watch. This was the music people who grew up in the 50’s enjoyed and those who became musician learned. The Joan Baez San Francisco album (the suppressed album) had some Everly Bros. and in after hours at folk clubs their songs were known and played. Linda Ronstadt did some poignant renditions as did many others. Thos. |
