Subject: How was Eaglewood? From: Steve Latimer Date: 28 Aug 00 - 10:36 AM I was unable to attend Eaglewood, How was it? |
Subject: RE: How was Eaglewood? From: Tony Burns Date: 28 Aug 00 - 11:20 AM In spite of the inclement weather it seems to have been a huge success. They announced on Saturday that they had hit the break-even point. I don't remember such a big crowd at the Saturday evening concert before. I enjoyed it very much. |

Subject: RE: How was Eaglewood? From: Rick Fielding Date: 29 Aug 00 - 12:49 AM I've played Eaglewood several times and once again had a great time. New A.D. Doug MacArthur did a fine job. Met Ray Materick for the first time, although I've loved his music for mannnnny years (remember "Linda, Put The Coffee On"?) Best moment for me was a workshop with James Gordon, Haines, and Layton, called "Searching for Canada". T'will stay in my memory for quite a while. Rick |
Subject: RE: How was Eaglewood? From: flattop Date: 01 Sep 00 - 09:49 PM I wanted to go to Eaglewood but didn't get through the work problems in time. I guess the eagle has flown from the wood by now. My apologies to Rick for talking about Eaglewood on Mudcat and then not showing up. I still haven't gotten through the problems so I have stuff to work on over this Labour Day weekend. It's been that kind of week. No time to read mudThreads, not even to keep up on things like Crap Circles near Orillia. You know that I usually like to participate. I hope that someone's keeping a Hawk eye on them. Any good threads lately or do I have to try and start a wierd one on my own? |
Subject: RE: How was Eaglewood? From: Rick Fielding Date: 01 Sep 00 - 11:31 PM Well "Top" the weird ones can be pretty interesting at times. I forgot to mention that I got my instruments severely rained on at Eaglewood. Just came up too fast to cover 'em. My 1949 Martin 0-18 (which is much beloved) felt like a pile of wet wax that night. Ahh fuckett, it's still a great festival! Rick |
Subject: RE: How was Eaglewood? From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 02 Sep 00 - 03:33 AM Eaglewood was just fine. It is the first time I have seen Ray Materick in a festival setting, and that was excellent. And darned glad heès finally got some of his stuff on CD. Made one of the campfire jams on Saturday night, but left early when it started to rain. Seems the folks who coped with the half hour of wetness then partied on to 8 am! Good on them, but I still recall (with considerable perverse pride) several years back when poor Marilyn had to come out and shut us down at 3am because 60 people doing sea shanties were waking up people in town!!! Eaglewood has to be one of the best kept secrets in folk music. Reasonably priced camping on site. Well-attended, yet never crowded; and how can you go wrong when the main stage is the front porch of a house. Only drawback for me was that I have some mobility problems, and had to forego almost everything that was happening down at the Hugh Carson Stage (I was willing but my knees said "no way"). For most people, however, everything is within an easy walk. Highlights - Rick, of course. His encyclopaedic knowledge and unassuming (but awesome) competence would be downright depressing if it was not so joyful to witness. Mark Haines and Tom Leighton just rocked the crowd. They seemed to be loving every minute of the fest, whether they were on stage or off. David Bradstreet, Valdy ... I could go on at length, save for extreme bleary-eyedness. If you had any doubts, forget them. Make sure you go next year. |

Subject: RE: How was Eaglewood? From: flattop Date: 02 Sep 00 - 10:17 AM Glad to hear that you had a good time at the festival Jeremiah. I was really stressed sitting here, about 45 minutes away, trying to find a sledge hammer approach to converting a 150 page web site from Access to SQL Server. Sounds like a wonderful setting for a small festival. I haven't seen Ray Materick in years and I've never seen him at a festival. I was hoping to hear Rick's tremendous twelve string again. I was hoping to hear many of the other performers. You are a lucky man Jeremiah, to have made it to Eaglewood 2000. |
Subject: RE: How was Eaglewood? From: Rick Fielding Date: 02 Sep 00 - 11:45 AM Yah, Eaglewood is an "usung" little festival....which may be one of the reasons that's it's still such a gas. Speaking of "unsung", Jeremiah and I both have acoustic basses made by an "unsung" luthier from Burk's Falls Ontario. Glen Reid builds nice stuff at reasonable prices. Jeez, his home town's so small you probably only have to write a letter addressed to G.R. (folksinger and woodworker..Burk's Falls Ont.) Considering that Eaglewood advertises it's "accessability", Jeremiah, would it be helpful if there were more shuttles (golf carts) luggin' folks to the farther away stages? Might be a suggestion for AD Doug MacArthur. Rick |
