From: Wesley S Date: 29 Aug 00 - 05:47 PM In the Stevie Ray Vaughn thread we were talking about the fact that we'll miss his music and we will always wonder what types of things he would have been doing if he were still alive. So the question is whose music will you miss? I for one will wonder about Fred Neil. As far as I know he's not dead - he's just dropped out of music. But I wonder what types of songs he would be doing now, and would I still be listening? So who do you wish had the chance to put out one more recording?? |

I think he was as creative and innovative as anyone I've heard. I also think he was just hitting his stride. I wish he would drop into a studio one or twice a decade so those of us who love his music could hear that 12 string and subsonic voice of his. It sure would be nice to tell him that there is at least one guy out there { and probably a lot more } that really loves his music. |

Thanks to the minor miracle of sound recording, their voices or playing are with me yet. What I really miss is them! Of my all-time heroes, I'd hate to think that I would never see Tom Paxton again.

Gordon Bok (and Muir and Trickett) I also concur with whoever it was said that the earlier Bruce Cockburn stuff (before, say, 1983) was the best. Although his acoustic/folky stuff in the last 5 years has been very good. "Pacing the Cage" could not be written by a young man.

I can still see us on her porch, me in her lap and maybe two years old, and her singing me this tune. Not long after, I'd learned some of it, and she made me sing it for her friends one night after dinner. I remember that scene, too. I really didn't want to do it; I was so afraid. Now I cherish the memory and only wish I had the whole sequence on film . . . so I could remember what that tune was and hear her sing it once again. --Robo |

From: bseed(charleskratz) Date: 31 Aug 00 - 11:01 PM One of the great things about technology (as opposed to so many miserable things about it) is the fact that performances can be accurately recorded, so in a sense we will always have most of the people listed above, many of them in startlingly wonderful filmed performances. I'm thinking particularly of an Elvis Presley performance I saw several years ago on public television: Elvis, a bass player, and his drummer pounding on a guitar case in a small studio. Elvis was dressed in jeans and some kind of shirt--normal, everyday clothes unlike the pimp suits he wore on stage, sitting in a chair playing accoustic guitar and singing quietly to a small group sitting around. It had the feel of a house concert...the guy could flat out sing as well as anybody anywhere when he didn't have to shout over an orchestra. I'll have to agree, though, that tape or film or vinyl or CDs, while valuable, will never replace live concerts--I saw Tom Paxton about eight years ago, unforgettable. And the Dry Branch Fire Squad and the Austin Lounge Lizards, Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum, I'd like to have those performances on film or DVD, but I wouldn't trade the memory of them live for the record. Since the question was asked in the future tense, I immediately thought of people who are getting old--Doc Watson was the first. Pete Seeger, of course. Last weekend I saw Earl Scruggs playing with Bela Fleck and his bluegrass group. Earl will be missed, and thank God for Bela. I saw Ralph Stanley a few years ago...is he still alive? David Grissman was playing with him. A great concert...Ralph, at his advanced age, was still picking as fast as anybody; the banjo was getting a bit heavy for him, so after a few numbers he passed it to his son (and later auctioned it off). But, to add a couple of names to the list of the dearly missed, past tense: Maybelle Carter, Cisco Houston, Phil Ochs, Nat Cole, Paul Robeson, Peggy Lee, Jesse Fuller... --seed |

He'd been in the Filipines prior to that. There are too many I miss. A couple have already been mentioned. I traveled a great deal, and couldn't always find folkies where I lived. I loved Ewan McColl's music, and when I reconnected with folkes in the mid-80's, was very sad to learn he'd died. I only know him from recordings. I saw Peter Bellamy in the 70's, and always thought I'd get another chance. I learned of his death several years after it happened. It's painful to think of those alive now being lost. If I never had the chance to see Dick Gaughan, the Watersons/Carthys in any combination, Maddy Prior, ...damn, there are so many. I really would have liked to hear the Battlefield Band when Davey Steele was with them. |

For one, there would have been so much more great music composed by him if he lived longer, it staggers the mind to imagine it. Secondly, as Liz said, his music would have matured more. His late quartets show a hint of the advances he was starting to make, and he would have been a tremendous influence on further classical music development. I miss the Bothy Band. They're all alive and performing music, but that special mix when they were together is missed. As one who loves pipe music as well, Pipe Major G.S. McLennan was a great and prolific composer of highland pipe tunes, a child prodigy, and a pure genius. He died at age 45. There would have been a lot more great tunes entering the repertoire of Celtic musicians - not just of pipers - had he lived longer. I wish John Lennon would have been around for a real Beatles reunion. I wonder what other gems Woody Guthrie would have come up with. |

Is there a "greatest hits" type album, that's NOT live, that includes 30k lbs of bananas, taxi, cat's cradle, and WOLD? I must have at least those 4 songs, and would prefer the studio version at this point, although I'm willing to be talked out of that if y'all say his live stuff is much better than the studio versions.
