Subject: RE: Groups with animal names! From: Little Hawk Date: 01 Sep 00 - 10:28 PM Okay, Spaw. I tell you this extremely arcane and hidden knowledge at the risk of unhinging your mind... Toad, The Wet Sprocket refers to one of the high-tech devices that malfunctioned in Major Tom's space capsule, condemning him to a lingering death in deep space. There are numerous sprockets of differing sizes in any space vehicle, each one of them playing a vital part in its proper function. Major Tom had taken along several small animals, in order to perform routine tests to see how they could cope with zero gravity and other effects of being in space. One of them was a toad. The toad, unfortunately escaped during the zero gravity test and made its way through a small access port, vanishing into the navigation machinery module. Eventually said toad felt a need to relieve itself, peeing on the sprocket in question (gravity effect having been restored by that time). The result was a short circuit which blew out the navigation systems, dooming Major Tom, as well as the toad, and resulting in the song you know and love so well. And there ya have it. Toad, The Wet Sprocket. (Either that or it was the usual young @$$holes trying desperately to come up with an original name for their band...) |
Subject: RE: Groups with animal names! From: Mbo Date: 01 Sep 00 - 10:30 PM Toad the Wet Sprocket are cool! Very folk/rock-ish. No joke, I believe the name is a reference to a Rolling Stone song. |

Subject: RE: Groups with animal names! From: Little Hawk Date: 02 Sep 00 - 06:47 PM I don't get it either, Mbo. I think Raptor has depleted his brain cells through rampant sexual excess. Either that or it's crawling on his belly through the underbrush trying to snap a closeup of the Ream-Nosed Romflombler. One was rumoured to be in the area a couple of weeks ago, and he's been a little dingy ever since...Raptor, I mean, not the Romflombler. Spaw - I am quite miffed about missing out on the bidding for the Amish Australian Pitchfork Moustache Tuner. It's not often a chance like that comes up. Has anyone noticed that dogs and fish seem to be dominating the theme? Interesting. Why not penguins and aardvarks? Go figure. We'd had a good night...several bands had been playing.....back to B&B in the early hours. I was sitting at the breakfast table and through half-open eyes I saw a fella that I thought I recognised from a band on the stage the night before. No sleep so I wasn't too sure......but I had to ask anyway! "Excuse me, but would you be a Squealing Pig?" Thankfully, much to my relief....he was! An elderly couple at the next table were highly amused. I think the band were from London/Londonderry way. So there you go now...a long way round to it.....The Squealing Pigs!!!! best wishes, Yvonne |

Subject: RE: Groups with animal names! From: Little Hawk Date: 05 Sep 00 - 09:45 AM Grab - You had the temerity to introduce the supposed evolution vs. creation debate...Ooooooo, boy! Well I've got news fer ya...no need for said debate at all. You see, both evolution AND creation are perfectly legitimate notions, and are not mutually exclusive. To wit: Creation may be termed as the single original impetus that got the whole ball rolling (the "Big Bang", if you want to put it in scientific terms). The scientists' only misperception about said Big Bang is that he doesn't seem to realize that there was a conscious purpose and intention behind it. There was. That was creation. Now, within creation were embodied numerous handy and elegantly workable mechanisms to modify said creation and move it onward into new and interesting developments...such as evolution. Evolution was based on numerous factors, such as survival, beauty and aesthetic considerations of all kinds, the desire toward perfection, the desire to test out all possible theories and limitations, and so on, ad infinitum. None of that was accidental. Evolution is simply a smaller aspect of life contained within the whole of what we could term creation. No need for a debate between them at all.

Subject: RE: Groups with animal names! From: Little Hawk Date: 07 Sep 00 - 11:42 PM Here's a REALLY obscure one...there was an adult comic called "Omaha The Cat Dancer". It had characters who were cartoon animals, such as cats, dogs, buffalo, different kinds of birds, etc...dressed up and behaving like 20th century people in our society, and it openly depicted their sex life at times, as well as all the other aspects. In some respects it was a pretty good comic (and may still be around, for all I know). They had a band in that comic called "The Herd". Now, I believe there actually is a human band called The Herd which was a spinoff from that, formed by musician friends of the couple who draw and write that comic...I can't recall their names. I have an "Omaha The Cat Dancer" T-shirt. It's cool. |
