Subject: Fantasy 'Folk' Festival

Several things are given ... "folk" is given a fairly wide definition (so no quibbling over whether certain acts are eligible), the weather's fine, the beer's free, the toilets plentiful and scrupulously clean.

So what would constitute your favourite two-day festival? Maximum of twelve acts per day. Kicks off at noon. Two headline acts get an hour and a half each. Other acts get an hour. Closedown at midnight but plenty of sessions kick off around the campfire and the bars stay open all night. And miraculously, given that this is a fantasy festival, the noise created by the revellers who wish to stay up all night doesn't interfere with the sleep of the more abstemious festivalgoers.

Doesn't matter that the acts are no longer with us! This is after all a fantasy festival.

Here goes with my line up.

VENUE : ACHILL ISLAND, County Mayo

Day One

1. John Prine 2. Johnny Cash 3. The Carter Family 4. Jimmie Rodgers 5. Townes Van Zandt 6. Emmylou Harris 7. The Flying Burrito Brothers (original line-up) 8. Guy Clark 9. Steve Earle & The Del McCoury Band 10. Bill Monroe and Doc Watson 11. Hank Williams Snr 12. Flatt & Scruggs

Day Two

1. Sweeney's Men 2. The Johnstons 3. Finbar & Eddie Furey 4. Pecker Dunne & Margaret Barry 5. The Bucks 6. Patrick Street 7. Altan 8. The Pogues (after If I Should Fall ...) 9. The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem 10. The Dubliners (original line-up) 11. Planxty 12. The Bothy Band

A Country and a Folk day. I'd turn up to both !!

Quite a senario and hard to hold it to just twelve a day, but here goes, in no particular order except I'd have Sandy Denny headline one day and Richard Thompson the other.

Day One
1. Sandy Denny 2. The Watersons 3. Fairport Convention 4. Ralph McTell 5. Kate Rusby 6. Loreena McKennitt 7. Dick Gaughan 8. Lonnie Donegan 9. John Renbourn 10. Bert Jansch 11. Last two together 12 Then with Pentangle
Day Two
1. Nic Jones 2. John Tamms 3. Les Barker 4. Arlo Guthrie 5. Chieftains 6. Christy Moore 7. Donovan (a little Irish burst there) 8. Eric Bogle 9 The Indigo Girls 10 Stan Rogers 11. The Roches 12. Richard Thompson
Now you've made my brain hurt. I'm going for a lie down and wait for the tickets to arrive.
Gary

Venue: Not certain. I've never been to a venue that was perfect. It would be somewhat like the old Kingsland Bay site for the Champlain festival, but with a great deal more room, so there'd be plenty of camping and jam space, and venues could be far enough apart to avoid bleed.

Day one: (actual present-day acts)

Headline acts:

1) Tom Russell (with Katy Moffat and Andrew Hardin)
2) Doc Watson (with Jack Lawrence)

Other:

3) Ian Tyson
4) Norman Blake
5) FinestKind
6) Steve Gillette/Cindy Mangsen
7) Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin
8) Robin and Linda Williams (with group)
9) Guy Clark
10)Utah Phillips (preferably with Mark Ross)
11/12) 2 hour Open stage - limited to registered Mudcat members - Rick Fielding, Woodchucks' Revenge, Kendall Morse as co-hosts.

Day 2: (all from the past)

Headliners:

1) Ian and Sylvia (circa 1964)
2) the Seldom Scene (at their peak, with Duffey and John Starling)

Others:

3) Norman Blake again - with Nancy
4) Stan Rogers - with his usual tour band
5) Gram Parsons with that chick singer he had - whatzername?
6) Mary McCaslin & Jim Ringer
7) The Greenbriar Boys (original lineup - Rinzler/Herald/Yellin)
8) Tom Rush (circa 1963-5) 9) Bill Monroe - with an all-star band of the best people who ever played with him (there's a new thread in itself)
10)Dry Branch Fire Squad - before Ron let Suzanne get away
11)The Everly Brothers (circa 1957-9) 12)(Closing act) Joan Baez (circa 1959-60)

Peter.

The venue would be Girvan. For those who don't know, it is a small seaside town on the Ayrshire coast. Guests,in no particular order Clutha Ian Bruce Roaring Jelly The Kipper Family Willie Scott Lizzie Higgans Easy Club Ossian ( when Billy Ross was still singing with them) Danu (never seen them live) Whistlebinkies ( with Big Mick) Boys of the Lough ( with Tich Richardson) The Gaugers Heather Heywood Any Old Thyme De Dannan ( without Mary Black)

Now that I look at my list I've seen most of the above at Girvan over the years. Loads of singarounds and sessions and dancing in the Catholic Hall. And bracing walks along the seafront and not having to go home on Sunday afternoon. :-)

Day 1:

Rick Fielding alternating sets with Kendall Morse.

Day 2:

Kendall Morse alternating sets with Rick Fielding.

No folk festival should ever need any performers other than Rick Fielding and Kendall Morse. In comparison, everyone else is crap.
