Back, another lifetime ago, (mid 1970's) there was excellent folk in the university town of Orono, ME.

The Left Bank, in the town of Blue Hill, has a good reputation. It's near Ellsworth and Bar Harbor. Check the Dirty Linen concert listings, and I think you'll find several places listed. Last time I checked, this was the URL for Dirty Linen: http://kiwi.futuris.net/linen/67toc.html

Gordon Bok lives in Camden, and the cards he sends out often include gigs in a local club. If you live near there, you might try calling Tom DeMarco for advice on that area.
