You might try starting with a C chord and just go up and down long and slowly

Hi,

I could learn to read Vietnamese by myself
And I could even teach it to my good dog Ralph
And I could learn to read you every book on the shelf
And I could read your future like the Oracle of Delph-i
I could identify any flower by it's colour
And I could swim as fast as Johnny Weismuller
But I could never learn to get along without you baby
Don't you run away from me 'cause I sure dig sex

You can get love from your Momma or your Pappa
You can get steam from tortillas and lasagna
You can get steam from a turkish or a sauna
But you get all three when you make it with me
Baby.....

I must admit it gets me in the solar plexus
When I think about the differences there are in the sexes
Pizza and beer are neat.
But when you get right down to it, it just can't compete
With good old double-s-e-double-x
It's camper than Batman and bigger than Texas and
You're concave and I'm convexus
Welcome to the world of sex

Do I want you, is the Pope catholic
Do I love you, is a rubber band elastic
Do I need you, is the Bomb drastic
Let's be heterosexually
Entwined, we fit like a Hong Kong suit dear,
I dig you more than I dig root beer
Little green peas need a big green pod
And I'm just a sittin' here needin' your bod
So why dont' we go walkin' through fields of clover
Then lie down and kinda talk things over
You never know what's going to happen next
In the wonderful world of...sex.

You mean this one by Chicago's Micheal Smith and performed by Steve Goodman at the Karma Coffee House in Montreal in 1972?
You're welcome.
Owl.

The lyrics in the Digital Tradition are unattributed. They look like they're a transcription of Steve Goodman's way of singing the song, but they're not exactly the same as Goodman sings it on the No Big Surprise anthology. Here are lyrics from what claims to be an official Michael Smith website. I've corrected some spelling mistakes. I haven't heard the Michael Smith recording, so I can't be sure these lyrics are accurate - they don't seem quite logical in places, and I'm tempted to add a whole lot more punctuation than I did.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF SEX
(Michael Smith)

I could learn to understand Swahili by myself
I could even teach it to my good dog Ralph
I could learn to read you every book upon the shelf
I could learn to tell your fortune like the Oracle of Delphi
I could learn to tell you every flower by its color
I could learn to swim as fast as Johnny Weismuller
But I couldn't ever learn to get along without you
Don't you run away from me, I sure dig sex

Ah you can get love from your papa or your mama
You can get warm from a turkish or a sauna
You can get hot from tortillas or lasagna
But you get all three when you make it with me

I really must confess it gets me in the solar plexus
When I think about the differences there are between the sexes
Peanut butter sandwiches are really neat
But when you get right down to it you can't compete with
Good old S-double-E-double-X is
Camper than Batman bigger than Texas
You're concave and I'm convex
Welcome to the world of sex

Ah do I love you, is the pope Catholic?
Do I need you, is a rubber band elastic?
Do I want you, is the atom bomb drastic?
Let's us be heterosexually entwined.

We'd fit like a tailored suit dear
I dig you more than I dig root beer
Green Giant peas need a big green pod
I spend a lotta time needin' your bod
And walkin' around through fields of clover
Can't we lie down and talk things over?
You never know what's coming off next, do you

I see that Michael Smith is represented by Joann Murdock of Artists of Note, Kaneville, Illinois - Joann is the wife of Great Lakes musician Lee Murdock, who does some good music, too.

I think Michael Smith is the Mark Graham and Les Barker of the Great Lakes.

Chicago's Michael Smith is indeed a brilliant songwriter, but if you ask Mark Graham, he might pick Tim Wallace as his (and especially Les Barker's) counterpart on this side of Lake Erie, after doing a warped songs kind of workshop at the Kent State Folk Fest a few years back.

For those looking for words/chords/music for Michael's songs, I remember him having produced a songbook of his work, and I suspect that Joann Murdock could let you know if it's still available. I don't think it had EVERYTHING he's written & performed in it, as I'd was looking for his reworking of the House Carpenter ballad I heard Anne Hills sing once live on the radio & hadn't been able to locate since. Don't think that was in it, or I'd have bought the book.

Happy wonderful word singing,
Joanne In Cleveland who IS in favor of sex.

I know this thread is ancient, but just in case someone is looking to learn this song....
I'd hate to actually have them sing "...is Camper than Batman." What the h... is that?!!
Try "it's faster than Batman"

No, it's "camper". http://michaelpetersmith.com/lyrics/w-w-sex.shtml Batman is pretty camp, but he's not all that fast outside the Batmobile.

Hmmm. I haven't used that word "camp" in that context for quite a while. Was that a 1980s word?
Batman was the ultimate "camp" television series. It had sound effects like "boof" and "bam!" illustrated in comic-book-style speech balloons. "Camp" is a particularly corny form of tacky humor. Anybody got a more graphic definition?

WONDERFUL WORLD OF SEX
Written by Mike Smith (except for last verse, apparently)
As sung by Steve Goodman on "The Steve Goodman Anthology: No Big Surprise" (1994)

I could learn to speak Vietnamese by myself.
I could even teach it to my good dog Ralph.
I could learn to read you every book on the shelf.
I could tell your fortune like the oracle of Delph-i.
I could learn to tell you ev'ry flower by its color.
I could even swim as fast as Johnny Weissmuller,
But I could never learn to get along without you.
Don't you run away from me; I sure dig sex.

Do I love you? Is the pope Catholic?
Do I need you? Is a rubber band elastic?
Do I want you? Is the atom bomb drastic?
Let's be heterosexually
Entwined; we fit like a Hong-Kong suit, dear.
I dig you more than I dig root beer.
Peanut-butter sandwiches are pretty neat,
And when you get right down to it, it just can't compete
With good old double-s-e-double-x.
It's faster than Batman and bigger than Texas,
And you're concave and I'm convex.
Welcome to the world of sex.

You can get love from your mama or your papa.
You can get steam from a Turkish or a sauna.
You can get hot from tortillas or lasagna,
But you get all three when you make it with me.

So—
I can't remember the words to the verse.
A short attention span is a mummy's curse.
This song started out pretty good.
I'll finish it someday; knock on wood.
Mike Smith'd be embarrassed if he knew
This is the one song of his I blew.
You'd never know what's comin' off next (do you?)
In the wonderful world of sex.
