Subject: RE: Tune Req: smarty pants from the 50's... From: GUEST Date: 16 Apr 11 - 10:31 AM I'm 83 years old, and we had an old (then) Victrola in our attic (record player) and I somehow obtained a 10 inch 78 rpm disk which had this song on it. That was in about 1936. So the song predates that year - I'd guess it was written in the 1920s or earlier. Did you ever find the printed score? I could sing the tune today from my early memory of it! Subject: Lyr Add: SMARTY (Norworth/Von Tilzer) From: Jim Dixon Date: 17 Apr 11 - 01:22 AM From the sheet music at Indiana University: SMARTY Words, Jack Norworth. Music, Albert Von Tilzer. New York: The York Music Co., ©1907. 1. Now, Willie Green, I think you're mean. You ran away and hid. You sneaked away the other day, With Nellie; yes, you did. You did; you did; you know you did. You didn't? Oh, such lies! I saw you with my own two eyes. You even hugged and kissed her in the lane. I'm mad, so please don't speak to me again. CHORUS: Smarty, Smarty, Smarty, Thought you had a party. Don't forget what the teacher taught. You'll be sorry if you get caught. I'm goin' to tell your mother. Just see if you don't care. You're nothing but a smarty cat, so there, there, there! 2. Why, Annie Brown, how can you frown? That's not the way to do. There's not another girl in town I love like I love you. You're jealous; "fess" up, honor bright. You know it isn't right, 'Cause that's what makes grownup folks fight. Is kissing such an awful, awful crime? I knew that you were looking all the time. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: smarty pants from the 50's... From: GUEST,Mary Date: 27 Nov 16 - 05:43 PM I know this is an old thread, but my Daddy, born in 1895' used o rock me to sleep with the chorus of this song. He sang it to the same tune as "School Days." Don't know if this is the correct tune. Never knew anything but the chorus and never heard the tune to the main part. Thank you for telling me all the lyrics. |
