Subject: Lyrics Requests From: Lena Date: 21 Sep 00 - 02:48 AM Hellobeautiful people!!!Desperate girl in the library needs your help for artistic purposes...Anyone could give me the lyrics of a gaelic song about a fisherman called
Baidin Fheilimi`(sorry for the mispellings...)
and a scottish lullaby called
Bonny Wee Littl'un?! Thanks very much. Please never send me to hell for my constant asking lyrics..... When you start a thread at Mudcat, please try to pick a title that specifically describes what you're looking for. Generic thread titles like this one cause a lot of confusion, and people often follow up and make it more confusing by adding requests for other songs. For best results, please follow these guidelines:
Thanks. -Joe Offer- Don't be distressed, Lena, but you won the banner for posting a generic lyrics request thread. You should give the thread a more specific title. |

Subject: RE: Lyrics Req: Baidin Fheilimi & Lullin the Littl From: Fear Faire Date: 10 Jun 04 - 05:45 AM A few little things about BF there: Bóideach should read "bóidheach". Direach should read "díreach". Feilimí is a little problematic. Usual modern spelling is Féilimí giving a long /e:/ sound to the first stressed syllable. This song was usually sung with a diphthong in that position derived from a previous spelling Feidhlimidh sounding like the diphthong in bye, tie, guy in English. I think Gabhla is rendered Góla on more modern maps representing the long /o:/ sound which developed for that phoneme in Donegal Irish. Toraigh is also sung with that long /o:/ sound in this song although it can be said with a short vowel in common speech. Beosach and deontach also have the long /o:/ sound to complete the pattern. Isn't this one of a number of Scottish Gaelic songs given an Irish version in the last hundred years or so? |

Subject: RE: Lyrics Req: Baidin Fheilimi & Lullin the Littl From: Fear Faire Date: 11 Jun 04 - 07:23 PM I think the forms beosach, bóidheach and deontach give away a Scottish Gaelic origin despite their being understood in Irish. |

He was an Ulster chieftain who tried to escape his enemies even though his boat was far from suited for the Donegal seas. He first went to Gabhla but thought Toraigh a more secure hiding place. Unfortunately he never made it there, his boat broke against the high cliffs of Tory. He was neither the first nor the last to suffer this fate. The above is from this site. |
