Hellobeautiful people!!!Desperate girl in the library needs your help for artistic purposes...Anyone could give me the lyrics of a gaelic song about a fisherman called

Baidin Fheilimi`(sorry for the mispellings...)

and a scottish lullaby called

Bonny Wee Littl'un?!

Thanks very much. Please never send me to hell for my constant asking lyrics.....

Please Note, but don't go to hell...

When you start a thread at Mudcat, please try to pick a title that specifically describes what you're looking for. Generic thread titles like this one cause a lot of confusion, and people often follow up and make it more confusing by adding requests for other songs.
For best results, please follow these guidelines:
  • Give threads specific titles
  • Please do not request more than one song in a thread
  • Be sure to search for your song in the Digital Tradition and Forum before posting a request
Even though the title of this thread is a problem for us, we'll do our best to help you find what you're looking for.
Thanks.
-Joe Offer-

Don't be distressed, Lena, but you won the banner for posting a generic lyrics request thread. You should give the thread a more specific title.

LULLIN' THE LITTLIN'
(Mrs Zeta MacDonald)

Lie doon ma bonnie wee littlin'
Roun' wi' yer een tae the wa'
Oh, lie doon ma bairnie an sleep bonnie sleepies
Mammy will rock ye awa'

Dream o' yer Daddy's wee boatie
Sailin' sae blithe on the sea
An' fin ye are waukent yer Daddy is comin'
Wi' fishies tae fry tae yer tea

An' dream o' the bonnie wee wavies
Dancin' sae blithe on the sea
An' fin ye are waukent the tide will be turnin'
An' I'll tak' ye widin' wi' me

An' dream o' the bonnie wee buckies
Nestlin' sae snug in the san'
An' fin ye are waukent the gamies ye'll play there
Wrappe'd in yer ain wonderlan'

Sae lie doon ma bonnie wee littlin'
Roun' wi' yer een tae the wa'
Oh' lie doon ma bairnie an' sleep bonnie sleepies
Mammy wi' rock ye awa'

Notes: Zeta MacDonald was Isla St Clair's grandmother. Recorded by Isla (sigh) on the Traditional Scottish Ballads LP.

This ok Lena?

A few little things about BF there:

Bóideach should read "bóidheach".
Direach should read "díreach".

Feilimí is a little problematic. Usual modern spelling is Féilimí giving a long /e:/ sound to the first stressed syllable. This song was usually sung with a diphthong in that position derived from a previous spelling Feidhlimidh sounding like the diphthong in bye, tie, guy in English.

I think Gabhla is rendered Góla on more modern maps representing the long /o:/ sound which developed for that phoneme in Donegal Irish. Toraigh is also sung with that long /o:/ sound in this song although it can be said with a short vowel in common speech. Beosach and deontach also have the long /o:/ sound to complete the pattern.

Isn't this one of a number of Scottish Gaelic songs given an Irish version in the last hundred years or so?

I think the forms beosach, bóidheach and deontach give away a Scottish Gaelic origin despite their being understood in Irish.

Báidín Fheidhlimidh d'imigh go Gabhla, - Feidhlim's little boat took off for Gabhla
Báidín Fheidhlimidh 's Feidhlimidh ann - Feidhlim's little boat and Feidhlim in it
Báidín Fheidhlimidh d'imigh go Gabhla, - Feidhlim's little boat took off for Gola
Báidín Fheidhlimidh 's Feidhlimidh ann - Feidhlim's little boat and Feidhlim in it

Báidín bídeach, báidín beosach, - A tiny little boat, a lively little boat
Báidín bóidheach, báidín Fheidhlimidh, - A foolish little boat, Feidhlim's little boat
Báidín díreach, báidín deontach, - A straight little boat, a willing little boat,
Báidín Fheidhlimidh 's Feidhlimidh ann - Feidhlim's little boat and Feidhlim in it

Báidín Fheidhlimidh d'imigh go Toraigh, - Feidhlim's little boat took off for Toraigh
Báidín Fheidhlimidh 's Feidhlimidh ann - Feidhlim's little boat and Feidhlim in it

Báidín Fheidhlimidh briseadh i dToraigh í, - Feidhlim's little boat was crushed against Toraigh
Báidín Fheidhlimidh 's Feidhlimidh ann - Feidhlim's little boat and Feidhlim in it
Báidín Fheidhlimidh briseadh i dToraigh í, - Feidhlim's little boat was crushed against Toraigh
Báidín Fheidhlimidh 's Feidhlimidh ann - Feidhlim's little boat and Feidhlim in it

That was the end of Feidhlimidh, I'm afraid. He was an Ulster chieftain who tried to escape his enemies even though his boat was far from suited for the Donegal seas. He first went to Gabhla but thought Toraigh a more secure hiding place. Unfortunately he never made it there, his boat broke against the high cliffs of Tory. He was neither the first nor the last to suffer this fate.

The above is from this site.

Lovely. I am going to learn this as my first gaelic song..then I will learn Cill Chais??

I never knew he met with an unhappy end or it was about a chieftain..thought it was just a kid out in a boat.
