Listening to Simon and Garfunkel's Concert in Central Park album recently, I was reminded of an evening I DJ'd a long time ago with a friend where we tried to line up all the "must get up and dance" records we could think of, in all genres. These included "In The Mood" (Glenn Miller), "She Loves You" (The Beatles), and "Late in the Evening" from S & G, plus some others (an Abba tune, I forget which, Satisfaction). "Late in the Evening" was the big hit -- we had to play it about 4 times -- such a great arrangement. "Living La Vida Loca" would be on my new list. Anybody got others (of whatever genre or era) that just drive people onto the dance floor.

Well, Peter, "Blue Suede Shoes" obviously and any uptempo dixieland number like "Whistling Rufus" does it for us. And for a slow smoochy one : "Smoke gets in your eyes", especially the Platters version, is "our song".But then, as Bert Al-Hansell, the Pasha of Mudcat (may his dreams be always of gorgous houris and may he awake to the perfume of violets)is fond of reminding me, I'm stuck in the '50s!

Seriously, however, I still remember going to see Queen Ida and the Bontemps Zydeco Band back in Vancouver about 1981/82 - at the Commercial Ballroom I think it was called that Granvilleand Robson). It took 2 min only to empty all the seats! The albums (even live) never captured this live show.

I love U2's "She Moves in Mysterious Ways." I'm a dancing fool so I love to dance to most things but this is the song that really springs to mind. And one I always pick when I decide to exercise by dancing around my living room.

A few years back when I was teaching high school, we' would have a few dances during the school hours at the end of the day. Kids picked the music and they generally wound up being affairs where a few danced and most stood around talking/listening. The staff deciced that we wanted a "50's Day" and a dance with it. This was in '89 and one of my more perceptive kids asked, "Mr. P....How come we gotta' have a 50's Day? When you were in school did they have a 30's Day?" I had to admit he had a point, but we went ahead anyway!!!

The dance was scheduled for the last hour of the day. Everyone dressed up, my Auto tech students really got into it, and we played some great stuff during shop time and I had a couple of great rods in for the day. I had recorded a tape for the dance which had an opening song of "American Pie" which played as they came into the gym. When it was over, I said that from that point on, ALL the music they'd be hearing was recorded before February 3, 1959.

It started with Buddy and the Cricket's doing "Peggy Sue".....Its hard not to "feel" that one, and continued on. Within 15 minutes almost EVERYONE was dancing! It was by far the most successful dance of the year and the kids couldn't wait til we had another. The same student came to me afterwards and said, "Okay Mr. P........You win." and then threw in, "Like always."

Hey Spaw. We had 20s Day at my school. The girls all dressed as flappers and the guys as Gatsby et al. My most vivid memory is of a 3' strand of beads breaking and rolling around the classroom for weeks.

I have to agree with Rana (are you working yet?) about Zydeco/Cajun music. Surely there is no happier sounding music. This music goes immediately to one's feet.

Another wonderful music that is impossible for the feet to withstand is the dubka of Lebanon's Baka Valley. If you find yourself at a hafli and don't join in the dubka line, you must be dead.

My Father's nickname for me when I was a kid was "Slewfoot." I guess that pretty much sums up my dancing ability. But as an ancillary topic... not to unravel the thread... there is plenty of music I have to move to. Just don't get near my feet. And when we're singing or playing music, there are some songs I could not sing if I was required to stand still. Black gospel has finally loosened up my old Danish-Lutheran bones. I don't think a sound would come out of my mouth if you tied me to a post.
