Hi!

I play in seattle's bare knuckle boxers

http://www.bareknuckleboxers.com

and at a recent gig, a 50-is African-American gent came up after we finished our very revved up cover of Bob Wills "Roly Poly" and said he remembered the song from church as a child, but with different lyrics.

He rememberd the key phrase as "Glory, Glory"; I can almost hear the song, but have been unable to source it.

Anybody got a clue?

"Roly Poly" is built around a very simple GCGD riff, and i know there are hundreds of songs that use that structure, so it doesn't surprise me to hear that there may be a gospeal source for it.

Please email and post so i can be sure to see a response of one comes up. TIA!

I remember this song from the time it was popular in the 40s. Id it has a gospel relative, I'm sure not aware of it. "The Essential Bob Wills 1935-1947," CD credits Fred Rose as the composer.

Doesn't mean Fred Rose didn't receive his inspiration from a gospel song, of course, but I doubt it would have come the other way around.

For the record, I thought I'd post the words from Cowpie - transcribed by our very own Gene Graham, of course.
The only version I've heard is on the same "Essential Bob Wills" CD that Doug has, and the Wills tribute recording by the Dixie Chicks and Asleep at the Wheel.

ROLY POLY
Recorded by Bob Wills 1/26/1945
Vocal by Tommy Duncan
Written by Fred Rose

[G] ROLY POLY, [C] eatin' corn n' [G] 'taters
Hungry ev'ry minute of the [D] day
[G] ROLY POLY, [C] gnawin' on a [G] biscuit
Long as he can [D] chew it, it's [G] OK.

[C] He can eat an apple pie
An' [G] never even bat an eye
[A] He likes everything from [A7]soup to [D] hay
[G] ROLY POLY, [C] daddy's little [G] fattie
Bet he's gonna [D] be a man some-[G] day.

ROLY POLY, scrambled eggs for breakfast
Bread n' jelly twenty times a day
ROLY POLY, eats a hardy dinner
It takes lots of strength to run and play.

Pulls up weeds and does the chores
And he runs both ways to all the stores
He works up an appetite that way
ROLY POLY, daddy's little fattie
Bet he's gonna be a man someday.

Asleep at the Wheel did a terrific CD called Ride With Bob: A Tribute to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. the Dixie Chicks did the lead on "Roly Poly" on the CD. Here's what the notes say:
Fred Rose was a great writer and this novelty tune written by him was raised to another level because of the incredible arrangement given to it by the Texas Playboys. The opening guitars and mandolin trio part is a dizzying display of stringed virtuosity and challenging rhythms. The Dixie Chicks chose this one because they've played it in their live shows for years...
Doesn't really answer the question, though.
