Subject: RE: BS: Who Else Listens To The Mediaeval Baebes From: GeorgeH Date: 26 Sep 00 - 11:10 AM Yeah, I can understand anyone (well, any male!) wanting to LOOK at them, but as singers they're pretty indifferent (well, actually, that's being generous to them . . ) There are FAR better performances of this music. Subject: RE: BS: Who Else Listens To The Mediaeval Baebes From: Ana Date: 27 Sep 00 - 03:46 AM Yeah - I think the Baebes rule!!! It's also worth checking out "Miranda Sex Garden" - Katherine Blake (of MB) was one of the members of that group too, before she split off into Baebes. They did a kind of classical/rock combo. I think their last album was Fairytales of Slavery - ?94. Ana |

Subject: RE: BS: Who Else Listens To The Mediaeval Baebes From: GeorgeH Date: 27 Sep 00 - 02:34 PM Sorry, I can't give any suggestions for recordings - although a post to rec.music.early will produce dozens . . It's not an area of music I choose to listen to "on record". But there are literally hundreds if not thousands of amateur choirs in the UK who perform this stuff far better than the Babes . . including our local "High School" (in hopefully correct US parlance!) whose performances are both technically stronger and more fun (again, "visuals excepted"). OK, this is based on limited exposure - I've probably seen/heard about four or five tracks of the Babes. But that's four or five too many. As an aside, there have been odd recordings by "folkies" of such material. As an obvious example - although hardly a direct comparison - the Babes' treatment of Gaudautee is a pale shadow of the the Steeleye Span version which (I'm almost certain) they based it on. If you like the Babes music I'd say listen out for some performances which do it justice! G. |
