Subject: Suitable Song from the 50's
From: Ebbie
Date: 26 Sep 00 - 01:07 PM

Last night a friend called, asking me for a song he could do for the birthday party of a man who was born in 1935. He thinks the man was probably into country music but my friend doesn't have a background in it so he needs help.

Anyone here have a suggestion? Or a dozen? I was born in '35 but I haven't come up with a definitive song and there isn't much time.

Thanks in advance.

Ebbie

Songs that I liked from that period (I was quite a bit younger than your friend, but still glued to a radio) included:

Party Doll (Buddy Knox?)
I'm Sticking With You (Jimmie Bowen)
Too Much (or anything else by Elvis)
La Bamba (Richie Valens)
Singing the Blues (Guy Williams?)

and for country songs, you could probably look for some Hank Williams, Hank Snow, Hank Locklin.

Probably one of the most popular country songs of the late 'fifties was *Fraulein*. I don't recall who sang it.

Hank Williams' *Hey, Good Lookin'* *Jambalaya,* and *Cawliga* were extremely popular country pieces in the mid fifties.

Fraulein was done by Bobbie Helms, and is a great choice. It was a big hit. Also:

Anytime - Eddy Arnold
Oh Lonesome Me - Don Gibson
Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain - re-done by Willie Nelson
Four Walls & He'll Have to Go - Jim Reeves
I Fall to Pieces, Walkin' After Midnight - Patsy Cline
I Can't Help it If I'm Still in Love With You - Hank Williams, re-done by Linda Ronstadt
When Will I be Loved, Bird Dog, Dream, Bye, Bye Love - The Everly Bros.
Any Buddy Holley
Blue Bayou, Uptown, Dream Baby, Only the Lonely, Pretty Woman - Roy Orbison (I'm genuflecting as I write his name)
The Race is On - George Jones
Tiger By the Tail, Together Again & Act Naturally - Buck Owens
Running Bear - ????
The Battle of New Orleans - Johnny Horton
Wolverton Mountain - Claude King
It's Only Make Believe - Conway Twitty
Statue of a Fool - re-done by Rickie Van Shelton
A White Sportcoat and a Pink Carnation - Marty Robbins
Just Because - ???I know Elvis did it, but it was a hit for somebody else
The Keys in the Mailbox - Faron Young (?)
Georgia, I Can't Stop Lovin' You, Hit the Road Jack, What'd I Say - The Genius, Mr. Ray Charles

Although most of these songs were done in the 50's & 60's they should be remembered from the teens and twenties of the man of the hour.

Hey, brings back a lot of memories! I swear I know every one of those songs, even though I switched to Elvis, big time. (Never went to any of his concerts though, because I couldn't stand- or understand- the screaming.)

At this point, I think I'll suggest Wayward Wind to my friend. He has a s m o o t h voice and it will be wonderful. Plus the birthday man travels a lot.

Thanks for the memories...

Ebbie

Hey Bart, didn't Johnny Horton record Running Bear, as well as The Battle of New Orleans and Sink The Bismark. But I think all of these songs are from the late 50's, say about 58 and later.

Running Bear was recorded by Johnny ("Cradle of Love") Preston, not Horton, and charted (reaching #1 in the USA pop charts) in 1959/1960.

Horton had US pop hits with Battle of New Orleans (1959, #1), North to Alaska (1960, #4) and Sink the Bismarck (1960, #3).

Well, I forwarded the lyrics to Wayward Wind to my friend and we'll see if he likes it.

I was surprised to find that WW (Sorry, WyoWoman!) isn't in DT. I did a Search in Yahoo. Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps, yeah! Later, a woman whose name escapes me at the moment had a big hit with it too.

This tripping down Memory Lane is great! As they say, no matter how long you live, the first 20 years will always be the longer half.

For those of you looking for songs that charted in the pop music charts in the USA, the very best web site is in Brazil, and is called Lyrics World. You can search by year, by artist, or by title. It goes back to the 30's. Great site.

clicky.

I was a small child in the '50s, but I remember my Momma's favorite songs we heard on the radio were "Tennessee Waltz", Patti Page and "Make the World Go Away", by Eddy Arnold. I can remember 2 that I liked then were, "This Old House", Don't have a clue who did it and "Sixteen Tons" by Tennesse Ernie Ford. We're talking country here.

Well maybe not country back then. I guess those songs were Top Twenty at that time.

Someone born in 1935 could well have had his musical taste set PRE rock 'n roll -- most of the suggestions have been after the dawn of R 'n R. I would go with any big Hank song (he died on New Year's Day, 1952): Hey, Good Lookin'; Cold, Cold, Heart; I Can't Help It (If I'm Still In Love With You); Mansion On the Hill, etc.

Well, I guess two out of three Johnny Horton songs isn't too bad. In baseball, that's a .666 batting average.
