Uhm ... I thought (i.e. I was taught) that this is spelled 'practise' and I wrote that some if not many times. Was that simply wrong or is there some trick I don't know (e.g. difference between american and english english)?

Joerg

No tricks, Joerg. Americans spell it with a "c." Canadians, the British, perhaps some others, spell it with a "s."

And, yes, there are definite differences between American english and the Queen's english. Very often, it's easy to figure out where someone resides, by looking at the idioms and spellings in their posts. Other times, it ain't so easy. For example, many Americans use "our," instead of "or," in their spelling of the word "honour/honor."

Unless you're a National Spelling Bee finalist, I reckon either is okay.

Depends whether it's a verb or a noun, Joerg- and who knows which Bugsy intended here?

verb: to practise;
noun: a practice.

That's in English English. I don't know if American English follows the same rule

Joerg, I am going to hockey practice (noun form). I will practise (verb form) my skating. The only way I can remember this is because practice (noun) ends in ice (also noun).

I guess I should add that that is Canadian English.

You are quite right Joerg. Guess I'll just have to keep on "practising" eh?

Actually this thread was labelled "Practice" as I was just seeing if the Mudcat would allow me to post. (See,"OK, What's Occuring" thread) which I posted later.

I thought that by labelling it "Practice" people would get the idea that it was a "Practise" thread that I was "Practising" on and not a thread of any interest.

STUPID ME!

Us colonials just have one word for it ... "practice."

Thank you all. I'm now deleting 'practise' from my vocabulary, because obviously I'm less often (or 'more seldom' or what's correct?) wrong with 'practice'. Sorry, Your Majesty, but knowing english at all is much too difficult and too important - I can't cope with details like where 'practise' is correct.

Cheers to all colonials

Joerg
