Subject: RE: East Side Story - the songs From: Mbo Date: 30 Sep 00 - 12:02 AM Oh man LH, you don't know how funny this is to me! We have a town near here called Beulahville, which we INSIST on pronoucing "Bay-yoolah-ville". It's the ATV capital of Eastern North Carolina. You can't drive 100 feet in that place without seeing some chunky good ol' boys (kids) crashing across the corn & cotton & soybean field stubble. It's also the home of many chicken farms, so... BAY--YOO--LAH-Lah-lah-lah! I'll never stop seeeengeeeng! |

Subject: RE: East Side Story - the songs From: Gary T Date: 30 Sep 00 - 03:14 AM Okay, I'll bite--is there actually an "East Side Story" (other than the 60's Mad Magazine parody, which had a Cold War theme), or are you all just making this up on the spot? |
Subject: RE: East Side Story - the songs From: Little Hawk Date: 30 Sep 00 - 12:45 PM Well, of course there is...have we ever been less than truthful to you, Gary? East Side Story was the original musical, written by Don Martini, an obscure playwright from Schenectady. It chronicled the adventures of some lower middle class airhead type teenagers in a suburb of Schenectady in the late 50's, and their attempts to deal with love, lust, school, social angst, and acne. The heroine was named Beulah, and the hero was named Wilberforce. Beulah and Wilberforce fall in love despite the fact that their parents belong to different lodges...one family is in the Lions Club and the other is in the Loyal Order of Moose. This, of course, leads to tragic and ultimately fatal circumstances, but I don't want to spoil it by telling you too much. For some unfathomable reason this brilliant musical went nowhere on Broadway or anywhere else...BUT...it did inspire a lacklustre imitation shortly afterward, which we all know as West Side Story. Such is life. |

Subject: RE: East Side Story - the songs From: Little Hawk Date: 30 Sep 00 - 08:52 PM Ha! Ha! I figured you wouldn't be able to resist posting to this thread, Hespy. I am truly gratified that the Mudcat crew are helping me in unearthing the superb songs from East Side Story. We may yet get it on Broadway where it belongs...and vindicate Don Martini at last. I personally know his surviving sons, Fester and Karbunkle Martini, and they are very happy about the whole thing. ....DAWWWWK! |

Subject: RE: East Side Story - the songs From: GUEST,Cookieless Chocolate Pi Date: 30 Sep 00 - 09:14 PM But there's also a serious movie titled East Side Story, which is a documentary about the genre of Soviet girl-loves-boy-loves-tractor propaganda musicals in the 40's and 50's. Chocolate Pi |
