Subject: How does Gravity Work? From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 03 Oct 00 - 02:53 PM I need to know how Gravity works, it is just bugging me right now. How is it transmitted? There are electromagnetic waves that propogate Radio waves and the like at the speed of Light. What propogates the effect of gravity and does it have a speed of propogation? So if a new large asteroid appeared in the solar system would its gravitational effect be felt instantly by the Earth and just what mechanism transmits the effect. In Star trek world I should think this would be explained by a New Particle - The Graviton! Roger |

When I was going to the U of Washington (1979-1983) I was told that the physicists there were on the cutting edge of graviton detection experimentation. Alas, they still ain't captured one. According to Einsteinian physics, gravity works by bending the fabric of space time. Physical objects bend space -- the bigger the object, the more the bend -- so that other objects (and light!) are drawn toward them. The problem with this stuff is that it's hard to put it in layman's terms -- it's so bl**dy complex.

From: Ed Pellow Date: 03 Oct 00 - 03:47 PM There is an excellent site ScienceNet where you can find out about gravity (or indeed any other vaguely scientific query) The great thing is that if you are in the UK you can phone them up for free and ask the experts about pretty much anything scientific, or ask for clarification on anything you don't understand. If it's too obscure for them to give an immediate answer, they'll either phone or email back (your choice) when they're found the answer. I've found them to be always wonderfully helpful. Ed |

He's got some very interesting experiments with magnets and such that certainly make it seem possible... This implies that it is not the case that cumulative mass attracts but that the operational principle is something quite different: spaces accelerate into each other indefinitely in the inverse square law, which is why every time you get to the ned of one, there's another one waiting for you to look across it. This also explains why space always looks homogenous, because the broders disappear in proportion to the movement of the observer's viewpoint, thus becoming seamless. And the bigger the apparent mass gets, the more spaces are entrained into accelerating into each other from all directions, just like unfettered imaginations galloping inside of weach others' visions. He didn't make it either, poor bugger - imagine how it must feel spending 60-odd years on that kind of work and still not cracking it. As for the new asteroid appearing, stuff doesn't (unless you're in Star Trek! ;-) warp into existence. So even at some unimaginable distance the asteroid's gravity will still be affecting all the planets, however microscopically, it's just that as it gets closer the effects become more pronounced.
