Heard the local weatherman say ,"tonight is the " Hunter's Moon ". I was cooking chicken on the grill and watched the moon rising , reflected on the pond in front of my house. With the cool October air, it was a very inspiring site, also very relaxing after the general to-do of the last week or so. Know any songs about the " Hunter's Moon " ?

Hi richlmo, I just had a discussion about the names of the full moons with a friend of mine...found this page which gives the names. As far as songs...Blue Moon, Shine on Harvest Moon, Blue Moon of Kentucky...can't find Hunter's Moon though.

Karolina, Where are you? I'm in North Carolina and watched the Moon rise about 9 o'clock p.m.

In Moonlore, by Gwydion O'Hara, I found that the Hunter's Moon follows the Harvest moon because when the harvest was complete people had to turn to the hunt for their main food source. It is also known as the Blood Moon or Killing Deer Moon.
Diana is the ancient Roman moon goddess and also goddess of the hunt. She survives in Shakespereare as Titania the Queen of the Faeries (according to O'Hara) which probably opens up a few song possibilities... But it's late and further research is beyond me..

Mbo, Read enough of your posts to know you are a Pirate! My niece's beau was there last year, but he had to come home. ( Not far from Charlotte )

Here's a link to a song I just finished transcribing the tune for, and a haunting tune it is, too. It may be up at Alan's page now that the Olympic moon is past. The first line is " Now is come September, the Hunter's moon begun.." ALL AMONG THE BARLEY.
Blessings,
Barbara

"All among the barley" is a great song!!! I have a recording by some female singer that is a bit wimpy (you know, proper "legit" soprano sound, no real character to it); I would like to find other recordings if anyone knows of any

I have the phrase "hunter's moon" among the lyrics in a song I am still fussing with (The Green Man)...I was trying to decide between "autumn moon" and "hunter's moon," so this is now a good reason to definitely include the latter (a bit more evocative) in one of the verses...

Johnny Collins did a rattling version of it which I think is on "Rafters Roar" (with most of Herga Joining in the chorus)!

This Green Man song sounds intriguing... will you share?

My astronomer friend, Frank ,just stopped by, and we found this link that names all the full moons. I asked him why I only notice the September and October full moons...I thought because they were rising early in the evening. Partially right. They rise early in the evening, but so do the Nov, Dec & Jan moons. It seems that the moon is opposite the sun, so rises at sunset. I just never noticed the December or January full moons because I was not outside during the cool evenings! Full Moon Names

the full moon basically always rises at (about) sunset and sets (about) sunrise. That's why it is full; because it is oppisete the sun at that time and the full face is lit.

Minstrel; Happy to share!

I did post the lyrics in another thread at one point not long ago; durned if I can remember which one! I will look around and if I can't find it I will type them in...

Now looks like I will work on it a bit more and maybe make changes...it is still not what I'd call "done" though the basic tune and most of the lyrics are there...

About sunset, yes, but if you are in latitudes far from the equator, with a wide variation in day length, the "about" can be pretty broad. It's actually twelve hours from sunset, and if it's a winter night of 18 hours, theres a few hours of darkness first. A summer night would see the Moon already high at sunset, so looking smaller. Around the equinox, of course, with day and night of roughly similar length, the rising of the Moon will be about sunset.

When I was an Amish teenager in Virginia, October's full moon was a special night. A farmer with a field full of corn would have the corn shocks tipped over earlier in the day so that when we teenagers arrived we would pair off to 'shuck' the corn.

I still remember the rustly sound of the dried leaves and stalks as we worked on our knees until midnight but what I remember best is being in love for the very first time and working with him alone under the night sky, while all around us were 50 other couples also murmuring to each other...

Are there any web pages with stories and legends about the moon names?

Animaterra - my first link above has stories about some of the moons. It's from Stardate from the University of Texas which is on my public radio station everyday at noon. They have a nice seach on that site where you can also search for various topics.

okay to revive this thread:

Wandering Minstrel; I finally remembered to find those lyrics for you!

Here they are. Copyrighted by me, etc. There is a tune, too if you are ever interested. If I get my recording project off the ground this spring/summer I shall probably record it.

Cheers, and sorry you had to wait so long for your curiosity to be allayed...

Man in Green

Saw him in the forest, His eyes speak trees and vine Saw him bless the harvest, His lips taste songs sweet acorn wine

Green, green his cloak green, green his hood green, green the garments of the man in the wood

Saw him dancing shadows Misty meadow grey, dew-dropping rain Watched him waltz with the barley mows Gold and silver shining warm autumn grain

Green his hazel wand Green his oaken shield Green his ivy-covered mantle, the lord of the field

Green the twilight glows Green the water gleams Green, green his secrets, the master of dreams

Green, green the stars Green, green the fire Green the whispering glade around us Green the shade of desire Green, green my eyes Green, green my heart Green my love's dusky shadow The man in the dark.

Sally Oldfield did a song on the Waterbearer album which has the line

"Man of the Sun I'm going to find you soon on the night of the Hunter's moon."

Sorry can't remember rest of lyrics but can get them if you are really really interested.
