"The Trumpet" is the tune name by which a text (by H. H. Milman) beginning "The chariot! the chariot!" is known in the fasola (shape-note) tradition. I first ran into this text in a (tuneless) syllabic Cherokee hymnal, and subsequently in a number of shapenote books including the Southern Harmony, the Sacred Harp Online, and the Social Harp. A couple years ago I translated it from some source that had only the first three verses, and where the second verse mentioned the Archangel Michael. None of the versions I can now locate have this reference to Michael. Does anybody recognize it, or have even a guess where it's from?

I looked at my sources when you mentioned this elsewhere, but came up blank.

If you want to discuss words and music for the various shape note books, there are some very knowledgeable people on the shape note discussion mailing list. To subscribe, send an empty e-mail from the address at which you wish to receive mail to the following automated-server address: discussions-subscribe@fasola.org
