I read in the local rag (L.A. Times to you), yesterday, that the long running folk music program on KPFK (Pacifica) by Howard & Roz Larman has been axed. They were there for over 30 years. This leaves Los Angeles with only one true (?) folk music program. What a crime for an area this size; thank God for the internet!!---John

I'm sorry to hear this. I lived in southern California for a number of years and listened to Howard and Roz regularly.

I used to lisyen to Howard and Roz on occassion but due to a concert series I always attended Sunday evenings in Riverside, I missed a good many of their broadcasts. Most memorable were the interviews they conducted when folk artist came to town. I have had the good fortune of meeting the Larmans and they are indeed good folks.
I hope John Davis show still airs Saturday mornings. If KPFK keeps up the pace, they just might turn into a full pledged commercial piece of crap.
Thank you John H. for the update, since not having lived in So-Cal in the last seven years, I lose touch.

MudJ - John Davis is still on Sat. a.m.s; his daughter occasionally fills in for him and does an excellent job. Another station plays 40s, 50s & 60s western music as a sort of roots show on weekends in late afternoon, but it is interspersed with 70s-90s junk. That's as good as it gets here.---John

On a recent trip to Los Angeles, we were pleased to discover that Folkscene, Howard and Roz's program, has been replaced by a three hour folk music program hosted by Mary Catherine Alden. She has had a very early morning program on this station for decades and she now has wonderful Sunday evening show. The music is much more traditional and not so "cutting edge". Check it out if you're in the area.

I used to listen to the Larmans for years growing up in LA, sorry to see them going. But maybe they'll just go across town to KCRW where all the other KPFK people went twenty years ago.

I haven't lived in LA for a decade: I'm now in Humboldt County, where all the LA folk have gone to live :)

I do remember the Larmans fondly, though.

Howard and Roz were "cutting edge" for 30 years.Their show is now being carried on KPIG out of Freedom CA.

After reading the travails of Howard and Roz with KPFK and the bullshit they went through, I don't think I ever want to listen to that station again.

As long as we are getting an update on this thread, let me second what Bev & Jerry write. MCA does do a very good show.

Additionally, KCSN (now available on the web) has several neat shows on Saturday. An hour of cowboy/western music at 6am. A couple of hours of 50s/60s [primarily] country music at 5pm. All times Pacific as they say on the radio.

The John Davis program mentioned in an earlier message on KPFK (also now internetted) on Sat. 8-10 am, Citybilly on KCSN Sundays at 5pm, and the requisite bluegrass offerings on both of those stations are among those I listen to as I can. Things, I guess, are looking up in old L. A. Town.

But M-F there is nothing here, so thank God for the internet.----John

The Internet and Hober Radio. It si really sad to see what has happened to KPFK over the years.
