Subject: Need help with 1 hour 'protest' show
From: GUEST,Katie

I am a college student in Wisconsin who is putting together a 1 hour radio show on protest songs in the U.S. I would appreciate any input on songs that my show would be lacking without. These protest songs can be from ANY era in music. I know that it is hard to squeeze all of this history into 1 hour so that is why I am looking to all of you for some help on the highlights. Thanks!

Bob Dylan's "With God On Our Side" and "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" are a couple I'd include.

See the 60's Protest Songs thread, you'll have a tough time keeping it to an hour.

Good Luck

You need to decide whether you're going to go for the broad picture, and give a taste of the songs of diffeent eras and different struggles; or focus on some particular period, and the different struggles going on at that time; or one particular struggle over the generations etc.

In one hour I'd have thought focussing it in some way might be more realistic - for example, it was Civil Rights, you could have abolitionist songs in, as well as more recent ones.

I'd recommend getting hold of Pete Seeger's "Carry it On", if you can, especially for the older songs (and their context), and more recent ones that aren't part of the music industry.

Pete Seeger's "Knee Deep in the Big Muddy" about Vietnam quagmire

Which Side are You On? labor movement (Weavers) and many others

Where Have All the Flowers Gone? Pete Seeger

Good luck. Sounds like a great (too too short) show!

Actually Steve and EVERYBODY ELSE, Katie took the suggestion of canoer and started a new thread as that one was running its course. She should already have the link to the VietNam thread and she's hoping to get the responses just like you have given. Keeping this to an hour show would be tough.

One that is mentioned several times in other threads was also mentioned by Pete Seeger in a recent special I saw. I found it interesting that Pete Seeger would pick this song from that period but as he said, almost everyone knew the words. "Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag" by Country Joe MacDonald was pretty well known to say the least.

Maybe to balance up the good with the no so good would be a nice idea. For protest song briefly became a big money earner, and we had 'jumping on the bandwagon' songs like 'The Eve of Destruction'?

Katie, don't despair because you haven't got a lot yet. The really knowledgable people haven't checked in yet.

Being a Wisconsinite (UW-'67) I feel a responsibility. Here are my picks from the acoustic side; others know the rock side.

Phil Ochs: What's That I Hear Now
Draft Dodger Rag
I Ain't Marchin' Any More

Pete Seeger: Where Have All the Flowers Gone?
Waist Deep in the Big Muddy

Joe McDonald: I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag

Bob Dylan: Blowin' In The Wind
Times They Are A-Changin'
When the Ship Comes In
With God On Our Side

John McCutcheon: Christmas in the Trenches

Malvina Reynolds: It Isn't Nice
Little Boxes
What Have they Done to the Rain?

Buffy Sainte-Marie: Universal Soldier

Chet Powers: Let's Get Together

Tom Paxton: The Willing Conscript

Pink Floyd: Just Another Brick in the Wall

Gil Scott-Heron: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.

You also said ANY era? There's the whole canon of civil rights freedom songs. Also a canon of labor songs. You aren't looking for them, too, are you? Tell your station that you have 2 or 3 more shows for them!!!

Best wishes -- LarryC

Wish you could have been in Big Mick's Getaway workshop this weekend on "Songs of the Struggle." Incredible. Some of those songs are intense! -- It was a three-hankie workshop for some of us softies.

Try to include some older songs if you can, maybe Joe Hill? Or Bread and Roses, if it's American.

Sandy Paton sang a song in Mick's workshop which I think is called "My Old Man." It's a gripping song about a man who was killed for union activity. Sandy? Is it on one of your albums? Is it American? (Sounded American.)

Helen Schneyer's albums, if you can find any, contain at least two fine protest songs about American coal mines.

Just for grins I looked up "miner" in the DT. The first song was called "The Day the Coal Blew Away." Take a look, it's a good song & a good story. Not American, though.

The ultimate struggle song has got to be "We Shall Overcome"--

Anyway--I second on McGrath's idea--what you should do is pick one particular issue, since there have been many issues that have elicited protest songs--From Free Soil, to a variety of union efforts, to civil rights, to the Vietnam war, to the environmental movement and have a sort of introduction that places it in the context of other "Protest" songs--

There are a number of people who contribute to the forum that can be of great help, Frank Hamiliton, for instance, and Sandy,(They are examples, there are others here as well) and you might even want to tape telephone interviews with a a few people to intersperse with your narrative and the songs you come up with--

Leadbelly: Bourgeois Blues (amazing 30's protest song about rascism in the white house)

Phil Ochs: Im gonna say it now

Dylan: "With god on our side" and "Its alright ma, im only bleeding"

Keb' Mo: Victims of Comfort

Dan Bern: Jeruselum

One of the songs sung by Helen Schneyer (available from Folk Legacy) mentioned by Ferrara above is Joan Boyd's "Fountain Filled With Blood," which takes off from an Appalachian Baptist hymn and turns the religious imagery into powerful protests:

"There is a river filled with blood
That once ran so beautiful and grand
'Til the strip miners tore down our mountainsides
Now it runs brown with the blood of our land."

That verse sent shivers up my spine when I first heard it.

John Prine has a few great ones including

rape of the environment: "Paradise"

Vietnam war: "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You into Heaven Any More"

drug laws: "Illegal Smile" (I don't know if this is really a protest song or just a character study of a druggie)

And of course Arlo's daddy wrote his share: "I Ain't Got No Home," "Do-re-mi," "Hard Travellin'," "Deportee"--and on an on

Others worth mentioning: Billie Holliday's Strange Fruit, Buffy Sainte Marie's "My Country 'tis of Thy People" (my nomination for the most passionate solo protest song performance ever is Buffy singing this song) and "Isaac Hayes"

Some old timers: "Darling Nelly Gray," "John Brown's Body," Joe Hill's "Pie in the Sky," "Wearin' o' the Green," "No Irish Need Apply," "Get Back," etc.

A recent one by Si Kahn, recorded by Hazel Dickens and by the Dry Branch Fire Squad--about the loss of jobs to wherever: "Aragon Mill"

The only recording of "My Old Man" (written by Jean Boudin and Paul Kent in 1947) that I know of, Rita, is on the Bear Family "Songs of Political Action set of 10 CDs which comes from Germany. Katie could do half a dozen one-hour radio shows drawing from that set alone! I learned the song from Walt Robertson out in Seattle, but I see it's included in one of the early SING OUT! reprints.

This, by the way, is not the song by Ewan MacColl which has the same title, nor is it the one I've seen listed on some of the folk radio playlists recently.

May I suggest Rick Fielding's "Pitman Blues," "Company Town," and "Voices of Struggle." This last song is the one Big Mick used to open the workshop. All three of these songs are on Rick's Folk-Legacy recording, titled Lifeline (CD-123).

Mining: "Dark as a Dungeon"and (much more recent) The Band's "Jericho", from the CD by that name.Phil Ochs' "Small Circle of Friends" is a funny song that isn't,, and check out his "Cops of the World". Protest from unlikely places: Elvis' "In the Ghetto" and Jackson Browne's "Lives in the Balance". I'd include as a real protest tune "The Ways of Man" from the LP by that name by Bok/Trickett/Mayo-Muir. But there you tread the line between protest and resignation...

Try a bit of light releief - See if you can find "Talking Blues" by Fred Wedlock (UK). Such classic lines as

"We're having a peace riot"

"Smash violence, kill the bloody warmongers"

and my all time favourite

"Played his guitar perculiar way, with all the strings tuned up to A.... nearly"

Good parody on the protest genre

Good luck

I can't tell all of you how much this is helping!!! The show is limited to pretty much anything from 50's to present on topics ranging from politics to war to oppression. We are taping on November 6th so until then, if any of you think of any FANTASTIC ideas, please let us know. Again, thank you SO much for all of this help!!!

I personally was a warmonger in the Vietnam War and would not find a line like "kill the bloody warmongers" light relief or amusing. Please keep in mind that you will be doing this very close to Veterans' Day so please read the lyrics to songs you put on the air and ask if they would be painful to veterans who fought in that or other wars. That's all I ask and then proceed with full knowledge.

GREAT MANDALA is the song that springs immediately to mind for me from my marching days (1969-1973). It was recorded by Peter, Paul & Mary. The Lyrics are indeed on Digitrad.

mary garvy, I always thought a warmonger was a purveyor of war, one who profits from it, no matter what the cost to anyone else (the same way a fishmonger sells fish; it doesn't hurt him, but it's hard on the fish). Most veterans don't come anywhere near this definition. It's a very good, important point about the closeness of the playdate to Veterans' Day. How about Steve Goodman's song Penny Evans? It's in DT

The version of "Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys" on Ry Cooder's third album, "Boomer's Story" (piano by the then young Randy Newman) is the saddest (and therefore most truely donv) version of the song I've ever heard. Might do for a fade- in or -out.
