Subject: Need help with 1 hour 'protest' show From: GUEST,Katie Date: 23 Oct 00 - 03:43 PM I am a college student in Wisconsin who is putting together a 1 hour radio show on protest songs in the U.S. I would appreciate any input on songs that my show would be lacking without. These protest songs can be from ANY era in music. I know that it is hard to squeeze all of this history into 1 hour so that is why I am looking to all of you for some help on the highlights. Subject: RE: Need help with 1 hour 'protest' show From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 Oct 00 - 04:04 PM You need to decide whether you're going to go for the broad picture, and give a taste of the songs of diffeent eras and different struggles; or focus on some particular period, and the different struggles going on at that time; or one particular struggle over the generations etc.
In one hour I'd have thought focussing it in some way might be more realistic - for example, it was Civil Rights, you could have abolitionist songs in, as well as more recent ones.
I'd recommend getting hold of Pete Seeger's "Carry it On", if you can, especially for the older songs (and their context), and more recent ones that aren't part of the music industry.

She should already have the link to the VietNam thread and she's hoping to get the responses just like you have given. Keeping this to an hour show would be tough. One that is mentioned several times in other threads was also mentioned by Pete Seeger in a recent special I saw. I found it interesting that Pete Seeger would pick this song from that period but as he said, almost everyone knew the words. "Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag" by Country Joe MacDonald was pretty well known to say the least. |

Some of those songs are intense! -- It was a three-hankie workshop for some of us softies. Try to include some older songs if you can, maybe Joe Hill? Or Bread and Roses, if it's American. Sandy Paton sang a song in Mick's workshop which I think is called "My Old Man." It's a gripping song about a man who was killed for union activity. Sandy? Is it on one of your albums? Is it American? (Sounded American.) Helen Schneyer's albums, if you can find any, contain at least two fine protest songs about American coal mines. Just for grins I looked up "miner" in the DT. The first song was called "The Day the Coal Blew Away." Take a look, it's a good song & a good story. Not American, though. |

Ted (inactive) Date: 24 Oct 00 - 09:48 AM The ultimate struggle song has got to be "We Shall Overcome"-- Anyway--I second on McGrath's idea--what you should do is pick one particular issue, since there have been many issues that have elicited protest songs--From Free Soil, to a variety of union efforts, to civil rights, to the Vietnam war, to the environmental movement and have a sort of introduction that places it in the context of other "Protest" songs-- There are a number of people who contribute to the forum that can be of great help, Frank Hamiliton, for instance, and Sandy,(They are examples, there are others here as well) and you might even want to tape telephone interviews with a a few people to intersperse with your narrative and the songs you come up with--

Subject: RE: Need help with 1 hour 'protest' show From: Sandy Paton Date: 25 Oct 00 - 02:44 AM The only recording of "My Old Man" (written by Jean Boudin and Paul Kent in 1947) that I know of, Rita, is on the Bear Family "Songs of Political Action set of 10 CDs which comes from Germany. Katie could do half a dozen one-hour radio shows drawing from that set alone! I learned the song from Walt Robertson out in Seattle, but I see it's included in one of the early SING OUT! reprints. This, by the way, is not the song by Ewan MacColl which has the same title, nor is it the one I've seen listed on some of the folk radio playlists recently. May I suggest Rick Fielding's "Pitman Blues," "Company Town," and "Voices of Struggle." This last song is the one Big Mick used to open the workshop. All three of these songs are on Rick's Folk-Legacy recording, titled Lifeline (CD-123). Sandy |

Protest from unlikely places: Elvis' "In the Ghetto" and Jackson Browne's "Lives in the Balance". I'd include as a real protest tune "The Ways of Man" from the LP by that name by Bok/Trickett/Mayo-Muir. But there you tread the line between protest and resignation... |

Please keep in mind that you will be doing this very close to Veterans' Day so please read the lyrics to songs you put on the air and ask if they would be painful to veterans who fought in that or other wars. That's all I ask and then proceed with full knowledge. mg |

Most veterans don't come anywhere near this definition. It's a very good, important point about the closeness of the playdate to Veterans' Day. How about Steve Goodman's song Penny Evans?
