Subject: In Llanfair
From: Liz the Squeak

Within the valley, steeply sided,
Where the Banwy river flows
The Catters meeting, long awaited
Happened ere the winter snows,
And there we were, all gathered round,
With tuneful voice and melodious sound,
We gather here, to share our song,
In Llanfair Caereinion.

With voices raised in mirth and greeting,
Music flows and verses sung.
Though strangers we, at our first meeting,
Old friends soon we all become.
And drinks are shared; new jokes are made,
And old familiar tunes are played,
And laughter comes from everyone,
In Llanfair Caereinion.

The Banwy flows, forever onward,
Through the valleys to the sea.
And so the threads of song and music
Joins us all in company
Though we must all our own way go,
Each separate path, or homeward road,
In memory, we all are one,
In Llanfair Caereinion.

It started in the pub, Saturday night, but only reached fruition this week. I'm glad you like it.

Bron, it used to be much more personal for you, due to the lack of things to rhyme with Caereinion..... I thought that it might want to be sung elswhere, and you would get embarassed, so I changed it. I wanted it to be like the Richard Grainger song I did in Hearme the other night, but it wouldn't go that way, it got personal.

Thanks for cleaning it up Susan.

Here's to next year, when I promise I'll do it on the stage.

Nice song, Liz - full of warmth and feeling. Hope you won't mind my pointing out that the correct name of the river in question is Banw, not Banwy. Sorry to nit-pick, but a good song should be as blemish-free as possible. Regards, T.

Lovely song Liz and I agree with Catrin that it sums everything up so well.

MIssed Llanstock, but I remember Whitby:

Climb again! Climb again!
It matters not the place you go or either where you've been
The way is up! So catch your breath and if the goal you'd win
On the cobbled streets of Whitby, climb again!

Oh Whitby is a town set where the river meets the sea
One week each year its walls resound to music wild and free
You trudge the narrow cobbled streets to get from pub to pub
But everywhere is uphill--that's the rub!
A thousand hours of music is the organizers' boast
And another thousand hours in the hundred pubs that host
The playing and the singing .that make this place the best--.
Till legs and lungs give out and you must rest

(To Mary Ellen Carter, of course)

Sorry about the river, I did ask what it was called, and as long as it has two syllables it doesn't matter a hoot, it could be the Severn, the Liffey or the Piddle, the sentiment remains the same...

Tegwyn, I don't want to be picky, but it's Banwy on the maps, and that's what the Bakery's called, and if we're talking "y" as in "the", surely it would be "y Banw"?
I know my understanding of Welsh is very limited, but when it's on ordinance survey.........!!!
Cheers, Bron.
