apples to you, nuts to you, spice candles to you, hot sweet cider to you, leafless trees against blue-black skies to you, scampering squirrels and single-minded geese to you, damp churchyard walks to you, frozen morning mist to you, pumpkin ice cream to you, wild rose hips gathered with icy fingers to you, glittering twilight stars to you, redgoldscarletrussetcrimsonorange leaves to you, loud acorns underfoot to you, woodsmoke-scented wool to you, intimations of lives past to you, memories and dreams to you, simple joy and simple sadness of autumn, to you all.

Blessings at Samhain, summer's end...

Peg

Beauty back to you, Peg, that is so evocative of my time in New England, thank you. Our snow started last night, poor little trick-or-treaters, and continues on this morning; the transmitter went down up on Boysen Peak, so Roger's day after his birthday vacation day has turned into a work day, BUT it is all going to melt by the weekend. Blinding white with clouds so heavy they skim the earth, dark green of the spruce contrasting sharply, laden heavily with wet, wet snow. Looking out makes one shiver, draw the shawl a little tighter, brew up a pot of tea, and curl up like a cat.

Low lying clouds along the finger lakes this morning, like fluffy bolsters or bundling boards between the quilted patchwork of the hills with their autumn colour. Streamers of fog across the road like fingers reaching out to the last lingering flames of woodvine and sumach. Frost across the lawns, like the sprinkle of gray at the temples of ageing youth.

winter is coming.

ah, the finger lakes! Thank you, MMario, for the reminder of my hometown...land of orchards, rolling hills, farms, vineyards, geese, deer, herons, rivers, and some of the best fishing in the world...

Beautiful, Peg, and thank you. The leaves are all but gone on the trees here in NH and those left are a burnished dark russet-brown. My daughter no longer asks "what kind of clothes-day is it?"- she just dons long sleeves and sweater. The entire city is sniffling and coughing - winter is definitely on its way.

Our trees are just turning now. I love this time of year. Kitties cuddle up wherever I go. Wind keeps me company at night.

Wonderful fall here as well. Noses all red from the chill, but the leaves are FINALLY in something resembling piles. Everytime we'd get a pile set to go, the dog would run 'round the house like some mad kamakazi bomber and dive through the pile, then streak away close to the ground..trailing my hard work behind him... Time for hot tea, and sniggling with the kitty in a sunny spot on the couch before heading off to work...Thanks Peg, for the beautiful glimpse of your fall.

This November is a birthday as always but also the older son, heading out and leaving me the beach and the wind that moves nothing...I still trust the seasons but not my participation in them. Not any more.

L R Mole, I feel it's my turn to do something for you. Do you check your personal messages?

I'm sorry about your son.

Happy birthday.

Warmest regards,

Carol

Well past peak leaf season here. The trees are shedding them fast. The woods are turning gray and green and the skies somehow look right with the gray overcast and the cold wind blowing out of the North. You can feel the earth crouching and settling as she readies herself for the snow.

Late afternoon, the sky's growing darker,
Gray skies have threatened all day,
Wind whistles against my windows,
Rhododendrons shiver and sway,

And where is the blizzard so long expected,
I'm stuck in suspension awaiting the snow.

Ah, well. Perhaps even the trees doubt, in November. Standing's OK, though, and letting the wind play other sorts of music.

Shovel up the leaves then change shovels and shovel the snow.

I love the fall. I've never viewed it as the end of something because it is in itself so rich in color for the eyes; chill for the touch; crackling for the ears; scents for the nose. The darkness of standard time signals more time spent inside surrounded by the things I've collected in my life and the hearty foods I like to prepare only when the temperature lends itself. Truly exciting to me. And, November has a wonderful sound when I say it aloud to myself.

Peg--great thread and to each of you above my post, what beautiful thoughts.

bflat
