I recieved this from Duckboots today. Unfortunately I will be out of town and can't attend, but having seen Rick a few times I would highly recommend going.

Dear Friends,

It's been almost a year since Rick Fielding has played in Toronto and I've been asked many times "where can I hear Rick play?" and "when will Rick play in Toronto?" Well, finally, I have answers.

Where: The Free Times Café, 320 College Street When: Friday, November 10th

This evening will be the first event in the Free Times Café Anniversary series, and Rick was honoured to be asked to kick off the celebrations that mark twenty years of folk and fun at the College Street landmark. More to celebrate - Rick decided to ask super-pickers Chris Coole and Dan Whiteley to join him, and it should be an extraordinary evening as this talented trio team up for some old tyme tunes on guitar, banjo and mandolin.

For The Anniversary Concert Series the Free Times is offering a dinner and show package for the first performance. Host Judy Perly will be setting out a fabulous full course buffet with something for all tastes, beef and chicken, vegetarian dishes, salads and desserts, plus tea and coffee. Dinner reservations can be made from 6:30 to 7:30 and the show starts at 8:00.

Dinner and show package is $25 and you can make your reservation by calling (416) 967-1078. No reservations needed for the second show which starts at 10:00, admission $10.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!!!!!! I can't be there. I'm singing at Newmarket Corner Coffeehouse that night. Blast and botheration. All of you lucky enough to go see Rick do so and have a blast. I'll be thinking of you.

I hope both Rick and Sophocleese have record turnouts.
Wish I could be at either gig!

hesperis.

Is there one of them that you haven't seen yet? That would be my starting point.

It's easy for me. I will be at an out of town hockey tourney with my daughter. Now I love being at my children's sports events, but sometimes it drives me nuts that I'm missing music. The worst example being that Taj Mahal, one of my favourite musicians played in Toronto on a Friday night last summer. I was in Ottawa for a lacrosse tournament. Taj played Ottawa on Thursday night, we probably passed each other on the 401.

I was aat Rick's show last Friday with 3 of my friends.(front row no less!) What a treat, we all were very impressed with the show and all of the performers. The selection of tunes spanned awide range of folk, bluegrass, gospel and traditional music. Both sets were about 90 min. in length, so we really got our $10 worth. Dan whitley was amazing, Chris Coole was cool and steady as a rock. A special treat was when Chris Quinn was asked up on stage for a few numbers. In my opinion he is Canada's answer to Bela Fleck! Also asked to sit in for a few tunes was a very talented, very young flat picker named Mark Roy(I think). Watch out for this guy in the future, his skill was quite awesome. Rick was in great form on a variety of guitars, and banjo. His voice keeps getting better! What more can I say, It was a night to remember.

I'm glad I finally took the time to look up Mudcat. Several people have raved about it, including Rick, who we've seen and enjoyed many times. It was a fine musical night and even though Hubby's the main GrassGuy in our house I'm getting there fast. I'd heard about Dan Whitely but seeing him in person was awesome. He and Rick seemed to have so many little invisible signals going on between them. I guess that's something you just learn over time. Several Mudcatters were there and one apparently came all the way from Florida! Too bad nobody had a camera, it would have made a great shot.

Hi. Thanks for the nice words. I've been in and out of town quite a bit during the last four days and missed this during my brief forays into Mudcat land.

Indeed, it was a good night. As I mentioned before, Dan, Chris and I did some jamming at the concert Willie-o booked for us in MacDonald's Corners, and I thought it would be a fun thing to ask them to pick with me in a whole concert. Grass-Gal, yeah, you're right, there ARE a lot of signals that go back and forth. Mostly about endings and who's taking the next break. Takes a bit of time to learn the nuances...but it makes things tighter (we didn't get a rehearsal in...so communication was important)

Glad to see a few Mudcatters out. I REALLY appreciate the support. Plus a HUGE surprise to see Moonjen, all the way from Talahassie! My schedule was pretty full the next day, so didn't get an opportunity for a visit or to check out her "F" chord! Believe she and a friend were headed up north.

I was just about to pick some banjo on "Rawhide" when I saw Chris Quinn in the audience. Chris is one of the finest Banjoists in the world (ask Tony Trischka) and I wasn't about to let him get out without a tune, so I vacated the stage while he and his young friend Mark took over. Sheeit! awesome pickin'!

How'd your concert go Soph?

Rick
