What do people think of the famous Twin Towers of Wembley Stadium, And Wembley itself, being destroyed? I think it's very sad :-(

Sorry. Wembley probably doesn't mean a lot to people other than English soccer followers. It's only my opinion I may be right or wrong.

There are a few sports arenas in the world that mean more than just a place for doing sports to followers, even if they come from another country. In football (soccer) that is Wembley, Bernabeu (Madrid), Maracana (Rio) and perhaps San Siro (Milan). Like in cycling that would be the arrival in Alpe d'Huez, and in Tennis Wimbledon and no other place.
Ask any German football supporter to tell you all football stadiums in England he knows the names of and he'll say 'Wembley' and then stop for that's the only one he knows. I think such a survey could be made in each European country with similar results.
There are a few sports arenas in the world that mean more than just a place for doing sports. One of the is(was) Wembley.

Are you kidding! Wembley! So many great musical artists played there! The famous Queen album "Live Killers" was recorded at Wembley, and OF COURSE the last great concert held there was back on July 21-22nd...the OASIS show. YES! The live album from that show "FAMILIAR TO MILLIONS" is due out in a month. I canna wait! OK, technically, Oasis was 2nd to the last to play there, the very last was Jon Bon Jovi. Farewell! The structure may be destroyed, but the music still lingers!!

I saw England play football there several times and I also saw a wonderful gig with the soaring voices of Crosby,Stills, Nash and Young with Joni Mitchell. (I was very spoilt in my youth). However, amongst all the sentiment being talked about it, I should mention that there were often large crushes between the separating walls between the gates. On one occasion, when there was great crowding, two of the three entrance gates were quite abruptly closed. There could well have been a disaster of Ibrox proportions that night. I hope that the new ground is a great deal safer. Alan.

Sorry, I only know about the famous twin towers in San Antonio. Duncan and Robinson seem pretty solid to me!

I am more of a Rugby man, and have visited Twickenham regularly throughout my life. I shed not a tear when the old Twickers was pulled down. Yes it had atmosphere and I have some fantastic memories, but it was old and knackered, pulling it down was a mercy. Your view was frequently obscured by pillars, the stands were little more than corrugated iron and wood shacks, the seats cripplingly uncomfortable, and there were so few loos that at half time the beered up fans used to have to pee against the walls, ankle deep in rivers of urine. The new stadium is superior in every way, good riddance to the old.

The only poignant moment I experienced was when I realised the old west stand bar had gone and I remembered watching ecstatic drunken English fans diving off the roof into the arms of their mates below after England had surprisingly beaten the mighty All Blacks 15-9 in 1983, and I was part of a rousing sing-song, when we did our best to lift the roof off.

Wembley has many inadequacies, it can only be improved. Many great club grounds have been rebuilt, Cardiff Arms Park has been replaced, time passes, great stadiums come and go, there's no need to get maudlin. It would be more appropriate if our national team made us as well known for our football as we are for national stadium. Slim chance.

I was feeling a little sorry that it was going although I only visited it once to watch my team, Norwich City lose 0-1 to Aston Villa in a League Cup Final (I can't remember when it was but I was living in Tunbridge Wells at the time so somewhere between '73 and '78).

All things considered, I suspect that GreyEyes is right.

Jon Freeman, it's you're memories of that day that are important, and they will live on long after the bricks and mortar of the stadium are dust.

Thanks Brakn. I'll never forget the goal. It came from a penalty which Kevin Keelan (my hero and the best goalkeeper that never played for England) saved but it rebounded onto a Villa player...

I don't follow football much now, probably as well the way Norwich have gone now... shame really, when they beat Bayern Munich we had a good side... anyway I'm rambling on here.

Jon
