Subject: Sunhearth Dulcimers
From: Jim Bean

My wife has a lovely Sunhearth appalachian dulcimer (large body, extra long scale) that does a pretty good job of meeting my Martin D-18 in tone and volume for duets. I'm looking for another dulcimer that can do the same job, to facilitate on-stage key changes. Any suggestions as to builders who's instruments can compete, or lines on used Sunhearths for sale?

Try Warren May in Berea, Ky. His have very much the large sound you want. Beautiful too.

Some suggestions based upon my own experience.

Bill Taylor - web.utk.edu/~bt1/default.html. My wife owns one. Several of my dulcimer playing friends own Taylors. One friend owns five at last count. I've always been impressed with Taylor dulcimers. Some have even excited me. Some have the sort of tone and volume I think you are looking for.

Jerry Rockwell - www.jcrmusic.com/index.html. Several dulcimer playing friends play Rockwells. To my ears, the sound is not as consistent as with the Taylors. Never played one that excited me, but their owners love them. He makes them in all sizes. Some can be quite loud.

Incidentally, the luthier who made my dulcimers, big beautiful ones which have the volume, sustain, and tone necessary for jamming with guitars, does not make them any more.

This thread is several years old now, but I thought I'd resurrect it in case people still refer to it.

I am Sunhearth's successor, and I build dulcimers with Walter Martin's original designs, jigs, and molds (though I have evolved his designs and model line since taking over his business in 1991).

I am contacted from time to time by Sunhearth owners who wish to sell or buy instruments.

You can reach me here or through my website at http://www.bearmeadow.com

We have a Warren May dulcimer bought at his shop about 1995 0r 1996. It is poplar. My wife had the idea she would learn to play it. It has set in its case in our house since about 2 weeks after she bought it. I see they are selling for $350.00 now. Is there any interest in this at $250.00? Is that a reasonable price?
