My media debut - anyway, listen next weekend (not the weekend coming up, the NEXT one), I'll be (I'm quoting the producer here) The Second Caller In The Third Half, after the puzzler and someone named David from somewhere (else) in Virginia.

I don't get to sing, but for those of you wondering... you'll at least get to hear my voice!

Is the half-comedy/half-serious show where people call in and describe car noises to two "experts" who diagnose the problem? I've only listened while driving. I always figure the best solution is to buy a new car.
Most of us will need the station call letters and a time.

Sinsull - yes it is, and they can be howlingly funny. I have to admit that most times, I only listen for the nostalgia of the accents (pj, I assume your bro has one?)... I went to college in New England and have a soft spot for the Boston whatever it is, not a twang... and to my surprise, though, they actually sometimes have helpful info. The only reason I called them about what happened to me is that everyone else I talked to about it said they never heard of such a thing and I should ask the car talk guys...so I did!

Sinsull, if you're serious about needing call letters and a time, you need to see what public radio station(s) you can get where you are, and call and find out if they carry car talk,and what dial position and time.

Mwahahaha!!! They have a web page. There's a directory of PBS stations somewhere down the page. They also put the RealAudio archives of the show up at their site.

I'm a avid listener to these guys. I always suspected that the show was not "off the cuff" but they really do know a lot about cars.

They get callers from the UK and Europe quite often and they really DO know their stuff; they've just got a helluva fun way fo disseminating their collective wisdom/experience.

Mrzzy, we always catch them at least once (our NPR runs them twice per week). You jsut gave them a first name, right? If you are comfortable doing so, would you please let us know what name we should listen for, or did you go by "mrzzy" on there, too?:-)

mY FAVORITE CALLER WAS THE GUY WHO WANTED SOME INFORMATION ON THE (damn capslock!) truck he was driving. As they asked him questions it turned out he was calling from the space shuttle in orbit.

Like Kendall I thought the show was more of an off the cuff kind of thing but I guess they need to do something to line up the callers.

It is, actually, off-the-cuff FOR THE CAR TALK GUYS. The producer screens the calls and makes sure that the caller knows when THEY are On Car Talk and not someone else... but the Tappet brothers DO NOT KNOW what the call will be about in advance, or who's calling, or anything. The show you hear is usually taped, but the tape is not edited after it's made. So my "call" has been taped, and I didn't think to call myself Mrrzy, kat, I ought to have! And (Guest)harp, I'm still trying to figure out what the third half is - but that's what I was told.

For further instructions: There will be a break, then the Puzzler (about 2 people out for a walk together, how can they walk different distances - if you hear a different puzzler, you're in the wrong part of the show), then there is a caller named David White (who did give both names, I didn't) and then me. But I don't know if it will air Sat or Sun. And again, not THIS weekend, next one.

We are big Car Talk fans, picked up the habit on semi-annual trips to Vermont to visit my wife's family. Click and Clack give pretty good car advice and also troubleshoot your marital or other relationship with considerable alacrity. If you read their bios, they are old 60's guys who accidentally became expert mechanics...

If you have a car question and you don't have time to try and get on car talk, there's a pretty good automotive advice forum on the labyrinthine cartalk website.

I have this fantasy about talking to the Car Guys about the advantages of driving & owning a Model A Ford. No fuel injectors, no computerized crap, just fix 'er up with a wrench and a piece of bailing wire, and you're set to go. Can't wait to get mine.
