I am searching for the lyrics and background information for a song called "Bonnie Jean Cameron". I've heard a version by Kornog, but can't find anything on the net. Any help would be appreciated. TMH

I've searched and could only find out that Alan McFayden wrote the tune played by Kornog to the traditional lyrics.

Sorry no lyrics as yet!

best wishes with your search, Yvonne

This is from the liner notes from the Kornog "Premiere" album:

A lovely song, once again with a tune by Alan McFadyen, Jean Cameron was a strong supporter of the Jacobites, and was, at least in the song, in love with Prince Charles of Scotland, the "Young Pretender". She is buried in East Kilbride, near Glasgow, where there is a street called Mount Cameron Drive, named after her family. The words come from the collection "Ancient Scots Ballads" bu George Eyre Todd. "Aye blythe blink" means something like "one kind, cheerful glance."

BONNIE JEAN CAMERON

O, ye've a' haeheard o' bonnie Jean Cameron,
How she was sick, and likely tae dee;
But the only thing they could recommend her,
Aye was a'e blythe blink o' the Young Pretender.

Rare, O rare, bonnie Jean Cameron,
Rare, O rare, bonnie Jean-O.

And the doctor was sent for tae see in he could cure her,
Quickly he came, he made no delay;
But the only think he could recommend her,
Aye was a'e blythe blink o' the Young Pretender.

Rare, O rare, bonnie Jean Cameron,
Rare, O rare, bonnie Jean-O.

O tae Charlie she wrote a very long letter,
Who were his friends, and who were his foes;
Any and a' her words were sweet and tender,
Tae win the heart o' the Young Pretender.

Rare, O rare, bonnie Jean Cameron,
Rare, O rare, bonnie Jean-O.

And scarce had she sealed the letter wi' her ring,
When up flew the door, and in came her King,
O she prayed tae the saints, bade angels defend her,
Then she sank in the arms o' the Young Pretender.

Rare, O rare, bonnie Jean Cameron,
Rare, O rare, bonnie Jean-O.

John P, thanks for posting the lyrics. I have Mick West's fine recording, but hadn't got round to copying them out.
A useful book on the involvement of women in the '45 (including Jean Cameron) is Maggie Craig's Damn Rebel Bitches. The Women of the '45, published by Mainstream in 1997 (ISBN 1 85158 962 7).
