Subject: 1st Euro CatConcert - HearMe or Paltalk?
From: Lanfranc
Date: 11 Nov 00 - 06:21 AM

Having tried PalTalk, it knocks HearMe into a cocked hat!

Which, roughly translated, meaneth I would prefer to do my concert next Thursday on PalTalk.

I know that a number of 'Catters are already on board, but I don't want to disappoint(?) anyone who doesn't or can't get set up on PalTalk.

Were I less of an HTML klutz, I would set up a blue clicky, but a search for PalTalk on the forum should reveal the URL, and some kind person might have set up a link by the time you read this.

Believe me, the transfer would be worthwhile.

Comments invited.

I know there are a couple of users that are having installation problems with PalTalk which hopefully will be resolved but I think that the time has come to abandon Hearme.

PalTalk may offer the best solution for our needs but there are other progams that should be evaluated. FireTalk is one that I can think of.

Certainly I for one am very impressed by the sound quality offered by Paltalk although I appear to be having a teething problem or two with it.

I have just looked at FireTalk and the system requirements are higher than for PalTalk, e.g. 233Mhs processor as opposed to 120Mhz. I have also made a failed attempt at using thier web based solution: the plugin installs but nothing else happens.

Well Done Mary... You now have "Sweetheart Status" LOL

Seriously folks, try Paltalk ASAP This system will suit Mudcat Hearme needs entirely. I encourage you to make the switch now. I have deleted Hearme from my computer and will not use it anymore. The last few sessions on hearme have become an exercise in futility. Paltalk Rules! Yours, Aye. Dave

I agree with everything thats been said above. I still have my 'L' plates on as far as computers are concerned but have managed to instal and use Paltalk . The sound quality is great but distortion can happen if you are too near the mike - the exact opposite of Hearme when peaople thought that I was whispering . There are also other interesting music rooms including folk on the site.

PalTalk failed to register me first try...but SOMEWHERE on my computer it wrote information on the name(s) I tried to use...and when I un-install it and re-install, it IMMEDIATELY puts up the log-in box with a complete set of unregistered names, and will NOT give me any opportunity to re-register!...and trying to use Bill D gets a crash in OleMainThreadWndName...whatever THAT is! It may be good once you get it running,,,but it sure is not flexible about it's own screw-ups!

I am still trying to figure out how to try a **CLEAN** install...(its uninstall program says "once you push this button, PalTalk will be COMPLETELY removed from your computer"...Pooh!

Bill, I posted some info on a freezup (not a crash) to one of the other PalTalk threeads. As for the other info, If you know what you are doing, try using RegEdit. Your username, etc. should be in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Paltalk. My inclination would be to delete that folder before trying to re-install but TAKE CARE!

Jon, I think the registry key you want is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Paltalk. Bill, if you used the name Bill D, with a space, it may well be the space in your moniker that's fouling up the works. Windows acceptance of spaces in filenames, etc., seems to be a mixed bag. I've had cases where it would accept the space in a name assignment without question, then hemorrhage internally when I tried to call up something using that name. Just a though for what it's worth, and it may have no bearing whatsoever in your situation. Another thing you might try is going to the PalTalk support page and clicking on the registration problems link. This theoretically sends your registration info to a real person who can tweak the system to either accept it or tell you what's wrong with it.

I'll join those with Paltalk problems.

Installed it, and something (I don't recall what) happened at the end of the installation. When I tried to get in, using DaveO as the nickname, and my standard-for-this-purpose password, it told me the name DaveO was already in use, and suggested DaveO_1. I ASSUME that that was my first registration.

Tried to re-register with a new name, but, like Bill D, something remembers my DaveO nickname and password, which gets rejected as an invalid password.

I uninstalled, and deleted everything that FIND could find that I could associate with Paltalk, including the Paltalk directory. Downloaded the installation program again, tried to install. Again, it "remembered" DaveO (which I was willing to change if that's the price of admission) and told me the password was invalid.

Anybody got any ideas?

Dave Oesterreich

I have tried and failed to load Paltalk. I get the icon, but clicking on it gives me an error message, something to the effect that the file was corrupted and I should try again. I have, several times. I can't even get to the point of putting in a nickname.

What a b****r!

I thought that if I could manage a first-time install when my terminal runs NT4, it would be just as easy for everyone else. Microsoft Operating Systems suck! and some of the software written for them ditto!

Back to DOS, anyone?

The jury is still out, then.

I've not tried PalTalk (my processor isn't fast enough).

That's my point really - the quality might be better but you'll be stopping a significant proportion of the potential audience from hearing you at all.

Unfortunately, the way HearMe has operated the past two Thursdays, it seems use of HearMe precludes any audience from hearing. Both concerts had to be called off due to mass dumps every few minutes.

As one who's having no problems with PalTalk, it's probably selfish, but I vote we go that direction with the concerts unless there is a dramatic improvement in HearMe, and soon!

Dave, I would suggest the same to you as I did to BillD. These details are in the registry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Paltalk (note IvanB's correction). Use RegEdit to find this PalTalk folder and delete it and then try to re-install. I repeat my warning be very careful when making this edit.

Nynia, try playing about with the sound settings in File/Setub/Advanced Audio. A suggestion that has worked for some is to just have boxes 1,3 & 5 checked. Overall, people are finding that both the sound quality and the stability is much better than Hearme's.

Campfire, just a guess but are you using a Firewall?

Ed, I think that Hearme is out. The stability has become so bad that it is unusable at certain times. As for compatability, I am concerned about such issuses but the requirement for PalTalk (120Mhz machine) is still low and not much more than Hearme's P100 requirement. I did look at FireTalk but rejected it when I discovered they require a 233. It is unfortunate that an increase in spec may count someone out but I fear that there is little that can be done about that and I think that a system that works for most but excludes some is better than a system that works for no-one. Also, Hearme are discontinuing the Voice Creator at the end of this year and introducing something else. I would lay a bet with you that this new program will require higher specs than their current offering.

If anyone has any other software suggestions, please let them be known so we can try them and reach some agreement over which system to use. My biggest concern over the useof Paltalk is the number of seemingly unresolvable installation problems that are being reported.

Jon - I don't think I have a firewall. If I do, it must be built into the computer - how would I check?

I'll admit I'm no techogeek, but I've never had trouble downloading and installing anything else. My computer tells me its downloaded and installed, but I can't get past the box where it asks if I want to open an account or log in as a member. I emailed support@PalTalk.com to see if I could get advice beyond the FAQ answers they already express-emailed me.

I wasn't a HearMe regular anyway, but Kim (Jolly) will be disspointed if she gets back and there's no available song circle :(

I'll keep trying.

Thanks, Jon. Then I don't have one. I re-did the telnet test - I had left out the space in the last series of numbers the first time. I got connected, but instead of "Hello", I got "HXUUA", only with a dark square where I just put the X. SO I don't know if I'm in their "no service location" or what. I did NOT get an express-email back when I emailed them, so maybe I'll get some real answers after the weekend. I'll post anything that looks like it might help anybody.

*wry smile*....I did figure out how to delete the registry entry of PalTalk...so I started over...but this time I used InControl...a program to monitor every detail of an installation....I told it to install PalTalk and monitor everything...I got the "PalTalk is now installed...are you doing a new account or an existing one" window. I said 'new'...and....nothing.....and I note that InControl says it is STILL monitoring an unfinished installation!...and it urges me NOT to interrupt it!...little amber light just flickering away slowly as 'something' happens...and when I click the PalTalk icon, it says "not initialized" and gives me an error message!....(this 'installation' has been running for 40 minutes as I type!!!!....If it is NOT installing properly, no wonder it wont run)....like 2 or 3 others, I have NEVER seen this kind of hassle with a program!

Campfire I did try it, and I didn't get the word Hello but something closer to what you have described so I think you are OK. The link in the FAQ article that I quoted was for a program called regfixer. It may be worth your while downloading this and following the instructions they gave.

Bill, I am lost on yours. Have you tried installing it without your normal protection programs like Norton running? - They sometimes cause problems but I guess you already have tried that.

Paltalk caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll 015f:bff7a195

Please contact us at support@paltalk.com with very specific details about your computer, operating system and if you do not have the latest version of Internet Explorer please download the latest version.

Does this mean that to ensure you have the lastest versions of dlls used by other programs, you need to download and install IE? If I am reading this correctly, it is another Microshite cheap trick.

I've finally managed to set up PalTalk. It only works if I turn my firewall off. Not much point in having a firewall if you have to switch it off...

Generally, I have to say I really don't like Paltalk.

On my computer the sound quality is worse than Hearme, and however much I tinker with my audio settings, I still get distorted sound.

Also, any software that automatically installs icons on my start menu, in the system tray, and particularly in the 'startup' folder really annoys me.

The constantly flashing banner ad is also far from great...

I've not been to hearme for a while, so I don't know how bad hearme has got. This however seems like a poor substitute.

Ed

Jon F - I'd misread your post when I moaned about system specs. I'd thought you meant that PalTalk needed 233Mhz.

OK. here's my setup (which won't be typical, but does work)

Compaq AP400 (400 Mhz Pentium II): NT4 SP6 : IE5.5 & Netscape 4.72 : Norton AntiVirus and Personal Firewall.

The only minor glitch is the installation completion email. I received two copies (possibly because I used the bigfoot.com redirector?), replied to one, which told me it was already complete, but PalTalk tells me it isn't each time I log in, but lets me continue, anyway!

It's on my list of minor unresolved niggles which don't stop me working/playing. When I get time, I'll sort it.

Meanwhile, HearMe is unstable, PalTalk seems to have bugs, but on balance, I'd still prefer to use it - anyone coming to listen?
