I'll be traveling to London soon, and would like to come home with stacks of CDs--I am particularly interested in music hall and theatre, popular artists from the 20's-50's(American artists as well) with a bit of folk and rock thrown in--any tips on good shops to visit?

Don't live in London any more amd don't get up there as often as I'd like but HMV & Virgin Megastore in Oxford St and Tower Records in Picadilly have all the usual suspects. My favourites are Ray's record shop for Jazz and Blues (can never remember the road as it has entrances on 2 sides)just behind Centre Point, Asman's in New Court opposite Leicester Sq tube for jazz (tiny but lots of gems, knowledgable staff, I think it's now owned by Mole) and Mole Jazz in the East End somewhere (sorry someone's walked off with the London phone book here!).
Must go, I'm salivating over the keyboard.

OK, found it: Ray's is 180 Shaftesbury Ave;Asman's is 23a New Court off St Martin's Lane and Asman's is in Gray's Inn Rd.
Don't buy 'em all, leave some for me!

I think Dobell's and Collett's (2 seperate shops) are still trading, worth the pilgrimage I'm told.

cheers

Don't be too shocked at CD prices in the UK---they're high!

Mole Jazz is at the end of Grays Inn Road at Kings Cross, well worth a visit but only for jazz (note that when you are in Kings Cross, if you are approached by a young girl in a short skirt, she is probably not going to ask you the time).

I didn't think Dobells still existed - they left Charing Cross Road many moons ago - anybody know for sure?

If you only have time to visit one store, Tower Records at Piccadilly Circus.

Cheers, Terry

Thanks for the tips--have been to the Tower and HMV--and I know things can be expensive their, but there are things that one cannot find here--and the sticker shock isn't so bad, since I've gone shopping in France!

Other suggestions are welcome--I am leaving on Friday--

I found 2 Used CD shops in Camden Market in Sept. among the stalls down an alley between the tube and the canal. I was shopping for Punk stuff for my 15 year old, but they seemed eclectic. The area is worth a stop, anyway, just for the experience. Above the canal is a bar with a fair pint and tables on a deck where you can watch the canal boats. cheers, Fortunato

M. Ted--

Surprisingly, an amazing number of UK (and Irish) CDs are available in the US--often cheaper than on their home turf. Try E-mailing me at:

dick@camsco.com

If it's in print, we'll get it for you.

I had to go up to London recently and was amazed at the collection of Folk and World stuff they hold at Virgin megastore.
My wife says that it's not called Virgin Megastore anymore since it was broken into!

I am looking for such things as the ASV Johnny Marvin collection, Max Bygraves, Gertrude Laurence, Beatrice Lilly, the Pretty Things, Nic Jones--and whatever else catches my eye--

Somewhere in the maze of little shops in Covent Garden is one that specialises in show music if that's your bag, I can't quite visualise it at the moment, I think it is on one of the upper levels. Covent Garden is a bit of a tourist trap with boutiquey shops but there is a museum shop there with strange things from a range of different museums and usually some live music around. (Theatre and Transport Museums nearby and good Young's Beer at the pub on the corner.)

There's a small chain of Folk Music shops called Hobgoblin that have a branch in Cecil Sharp House, 1 Regents Park Road (NB Camden Town tube, not Regent's Park unless you feel like walking all the way through the park) - excellent for folk CDs

The branch of Hobgoblin that was in CSH is now in Rathbone Place off Oxford St close to Tottenham Ct Road tube station and the Virgin Megastore
