Subject: Hogmany plan to annexe London From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 12 Dec 00 - 11:25 AM Trust our friends in the North to come to the aid of deprived Londoners: From todays's London Evening Standard online. I'm sure Liz, Micca and the rest of the Mudcat-in-the-Smoke chapter will appreciate this: London pubs' bid to be Scottish by James Burleigh First Scotland won devolution, now demands are being made to set up dozens of tiny-Tartan states in London for New Year's Eve to sidestep the proposed early closure of pubs and clubs. Pub chain Whitbread is asking the Scottish parliament to grant 71 London pubs the status of a sovereign Scottish mini-state to grant drinkers the same rights as drinking partners north of the border during the festive season. A spokesman said: "We are making a serious point about differing licensing laws either side of the border." Many pubs in London will have to close at 10.30pm on New Year's Eve because it falls on a Sunday.

Perhaps they cannot take strong ale in London, is that why they charge so much for it to stop the locals falling all over the place when they have had two pints? Cobble. |

Subject: RE: BS: Hogmany plan to annexe London From: Irish sergeant Date: 13 Dec 00 - 10:14 AM Ten-thirty? In the evening? That isn't time to hook up the nozzle let alone get a load on! Tell the Scottish parliament to declare them all consulates if they can't have them declare sovereign Scots soil. It amounts to the same thing. Kindest reguards, Neil |
Subject: RE: BS: Hogmany plan to annexe London From: Gervase Date: 14 Dec 00 - 06:07 AM But who in their right mind would want to be in a London pub on New Year's Eve? I'd rather have my cods roasted over a slow flame... |
Subject: RE: BS: Hogmany plan to annexe London From: Gervase Date: 14 Dec 00 - 06:18 AM ...come to think of it, it's a grand idea. Lock up the Scots in London pubs for the night. It'll pay 'em back for all those years of Andy Wotsit and the bloody White Heather Club on the telly every New Year. Risking thread creep, every New Year's Day there's a singaround at lovely pub called the Cabinet Room in the village of Reed, on the Herts/Cambs borders, organised by the local mummers. Last year not many turned up, so any Catters not too hung over would be most welcome, I'm sure. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hogmany plan to annexe London From: GUEST,Scotland for Ever Date: 14 Dec 00 - 05:56 PM Is Whitbread offering to register their HQ in Scotland, and pay some taxes (even nominal) for the privilege? But Gervase, who wants to be in their right mind anywhere on Hogmanay? Isn't that why whisky was invented in the first place? |
