At the weekend, I will be leaving to drive to Queensland for the Woodford Folk Festival, a major Australian festival north of Brisbane. By the time I return home to Darwin in a few weeks time, I will have driven over 7000 km. As a result, I have been selecting a swag of 50 to 60 CDs to play in the car. I got to thinking about the releases in 2000 that have given me the most pleasure. I enjoy reading the critics lists in the January issue of Froots (Folk Roots) – I always find mention of a few gems that I was unaware of.

It would be good to hear what other 'Catters enjoyed most among the releases in 2000. Below is my baker's dozen in alphabetical order. It was a difficult selection because 2000 has been a great year. I restricted my choice to albums actually released in 2000 with the exception of 'Prayers From Hell' which was released late in 1999. My particular favourite for the year was Chris Smither's 'Live As I'll Ever Be' – superb!

I know lists like this are anathema to many, but it can't be a worse than Brendy and Praise hurling insults at each other. Have a great yuletide.

Hard question, Stewie. Well, I'd like to mention all of the Yazoo collections that came out this year. If you want some, just contact Sandy Paton at Folk-Legacy and he'll make a believer out of you. Also, The Best of Broadside Collection. Also the reissue album of sea songs from The Boarding Party, called 'Tis Our Sailing Time, and the self-titled album from the Johnson Girls (both available at Folk-Legacy).

Joe, I agree about the Yazoo releases. I have all the 2000 series releases. I intend to send an order to Sandy for some recent Folk Legacy releases, including the most recent Bok, in the new year. I have held off waiting for the pathetic Oz dollar to recover a bit - hopefully, it will.

Another, although I'm not exactly sure if it's a 2000 issue is Tim O'Brien's, "The Crossing", containing one of the finest songs I've heard in years,"John Reilly".

John R. Cash's "Solitary Man" is indeed a fine recording. His voice on it tells you a thing or two.

'The Complete Vanguard Recordings' by Big Mama Thornton


...those are pretty much the only cds that came out this year that I bought. Mostly bought pre-2000 cds this year, for some reason. Weird.

But when I'm driving a long ways (7000km is, like, a long ways, right?) and start getting tired, I usually play a LaVern Baker cd, or 'God Bless Satan' by Mephiskapheles. They keep me awake, somehow.

My favorite 2000 release is a great fiddle CD by Donegal fiddler Liz Doherty and her band of 15 fiddlers, Fiddlesticks. It's called Racket In The Rectory, and it's one of the most exciting and joyous fiddle albums I've ever heard. This is not to be confused with the Donegal festival album also called Fiddlesticks, which, although she appears on that one, is a wholly different recording. Racket does not suffer from studio-itis. They all sound relaxed and play with the energy of live performance. The tunes are Donegal, Cape Breton, French-Canadian, Shetland, Scottish, with one Cajun set and one Finnish tune. A very addictive CD!

A not-so recent album is the 1991 release Out In The Night by the Irish band Fisherstreet. Again, very exciting, spontaneous sounding music, great tune selection, brilliant musicianship.

Well, Y2K was the year I bought some stuff by fellow 'Catters as well as the usual mounds of jazz, blues and Donegan so here's to Rick Fielding, Frank Hamilton, Dan Milner and Judy Cook who I would never have bought except for the Mudcat.
RtS (I also bought Paul McCartney's rockabilly CD for Herself,allegedly. But she's always said I'm a superannuated teddy boy)

Transcendental Blues by Steve Earle. Crossing Muddy Waters by John Hiatt. Not sure if Cool & Unusual by Martin Simpson was released in 2000 or 1999, but if it's the former I'd add that to the list as well.

I rarely buy new recordings. Right now I am really liking Sarah McLachlan's Mirrorball. I think the only new thing I bought this year is True North by Fisher.

Anything by Seamus Kennedy, Rick Fielding, Jody Stecher and Kate Breslin doing Utah Phillips' Heart Songs. New releases, Ed Tricketts Echos on the Evening Tide, and, Bob Zentz' Hove to and drifting. Also, if Folk Legacy recorded it, it's aces.

"The Roots of Rap - Classic recordings from the 1920's and 30's" (nothing like contemporary rap)
