Subject: Lyr Add: KEEP THE HOME FIRES BURNING
From: MMario
Date: 28 Nov 00 - 10:33 AM

from John_in_Brisbane:

KEEP THE HOME FIRES BURNING
(Words, Lena Guilbert Ford. Music, Ivor Novello. 1915)

They were summoned from the hill-side;
They were called in from the glen,
And the Country found them ready
At the stirring call for men.
Let no tears add to their hardship,
As the soldiers pass along,
And although your heart is breaking,
Make it sing this cheery song.

CHORUS: Keep the Home-fires burning,
While your hearts are yearning
Though your lads are far away
They dream of Home;
There's a silver lining
Through the dark clouds shining.
Turn the dark cloud inside out,
Till the boys come Home.

Overseas there came a pleading,
"Help a Nation in distress!"
And we gave our glorious laddies,
Honour bade us do no less.
For no gallant Son of freedom
To a tyrants yoke should bend,
And a noble heart must answer
To the sacred call of "Friend."

chorus x 2

Perhaps you can help ...

From: Amergin
Date: 18 Dec 00 - 01:31 AM

Sorry, Joe, but I found the lyrics he was looking for....though I didn't find a tune for it.

Home Fires
(words & music by Ron Kavana)

We had four green fields,
but that was long ago.
You've held our loved on hostage for so long.
We had four fine sons, 'til you took one away.
But we'll never give up hope for his return.

Chorus: And we'll keep the home fires burning,
Keep the flame of liberty alive.
For the fire burns bright , in our hearts tonight,
For the long lost prodigal's return.
And we're mindful

The Guilford Four, the Six from Birmingham,
All guilty of being Irish, nothing more.
After all this time, it's still the bloody same,
Can't we ever expect justice from your courts.

(CHORUS)

Divide and rule has ever been your game,
You'd keep the fires of bigotry flamed high.
But don't dare assume
you'll ever win this game.
The Irish will rule Ireland in our time!

What's this part about giving away our ladies to stop overseas tyranny? Sounds like a queer kind of honour to me.

Hmmmm. I'm sure you've found the one, Amergin -and it's not the four Green Fields (click) that the Clancys sing, is it?
What are the four green fields -four counties in Ireland, right?

No, they are not the four counties, they are the four provinces.

Yup, Amergin, I'm looking dumber and dumber. Four PROVINCES of Ireland, which is just what the Digital Tradition said, if I had looked. What are the names of the four provinces? Is Ulster one of them? I was aware of counties, not provinces.

Ulster (the one "in bondage" in "four green fields")
Munster
Leinster
Connaught

reminds me of a song I learnt in primary school (by Dorothy Parkes I think.....)

there are 32 counties within this green isle
and good soil and bad soil for many's a mile
4 provinces only, now ponder upon it
Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connaught

Do you know a mnemonic for the 32 counties? (Something perhaps along the lines of Tom Lehrer's Elements?) We have 39 counties here in Washington (the other Washington, that is), but I have no idea how I would teach someone who wasn't good at just rote memorization of lists the names of 'em all. Much less where they are on the map (I'm not sure I know them all myself).

Liland

PS Of course like most of the US although we have counties we've never had counts. (Or Earls.)

Hi Joe,
not a rhyme but at least a map of the provinces and the counties within each province (click on the map to see detailed maps of each province.
