Subject: RE: Cocaine Blues by David Bomberg From: Max Tone Date: 21 Dec 00 - 09:25 PM Well it's 2 a.m. an' I foun' this thread I'll be up all night with my nose all red. I'm writing words, won' get no sleep; This rock does roll but it don' come cheap. Can blue men do the whites, or white men the blues? Who gives a shite, When you got the good news. RMG Clifton -- If you ever remember or find the rest of the lyrics, let us all know, please -- sounds great. Taj Mahal's version of "Ain't Nobody's Business", on "Satisfied 'n' Tickled, too" (CBS 81346 - UK cat.#) has the classic verse (roughly!)--- Champagne don't drive me crazy, Cocaine don't make me lazy; Ain't nobody's business if I do Well candy's dandy but Liquor's quicker There ain't no ??? down in Costa Rica Ain't nobody's business but my own. Have a Purrrrfect Xmas Rob

Subject: RE: Cocaine Blues by David Bomberg From: ddw Date: 21 Dec 00 - 11:48 PM John Hurt, Mance Lipscomb and Rev. Gary Davis all did versions of songs called Cocaine and all are different. DvR's version, if I remember correctly, is closer to Davis's than it is to the others, but still pretty different. david |
Subject: RE: Cocaine Blues by David Bomberg From: Jock Morris Date: 22 Dec 00 - 05:36 AM Local blues man Al Hughes has recorded a darn fine version of the Rev. Gary Davis's version on his album "Sitting on Mr. Superbad's Hat". Scott |
Subject: RE: Cocaine Blues by David Bomberg From: mkebenn Date: 22 Dec 00 - 07:09 AM I've done this song for years and given credit to Rev. Gary Davis. Am I wrong? Mike |
Subject: RE: Cocaine Blues by David Bomberg From: Whistle Stop Date: 22 Dec 00 - 08:17 AM David Bromberg is a great musician and performer, and to my ears "My Own House" was his best record -- mainly acoustic, solo or small ensemble, with a couple of live cuts thrown in. I've been playing his version of Blind Blake's "Chump Man Blues" ever since learning it off the album twenty years ago. I saw him on the tour he did to support this album (must have been around 1980), which followed the same format -- acoustic solo/duo/trio. Great stuff. He doesn't perform regularly any more, but if he ever does venture out, you should make it a point to see him. |

I've started a thread on the origins of Taj's version -- Here, if my blicky works Rob |
