COCAINE BLUES

(F) Hey baby, what you (F7) gonna do?
(C) Cocaine (G&) all around my (C) brain.

CHORUS: (E7) Hey, baby, won't you come here quick?
(F) This old cocaine is (F7) makin' me sick.

Yonder comes my baby, all dressed in white.
Hey baby, Gonna stay all night?
Cocaine all around my brain.

The name is Bromberg and he is great. You can find lots of his recordings out there easily. And if you like David Bromberg, you REALLY need to check out Dave Van Ronk!!! The song you're referring to is in the DT HERE....a real standard!

The song Bromberg did is different than the ones in the DT. It was on his "My Own House" recording.

I call my Cora, Along come Sally with her nose all tore,
doctor says she can't sniff no more
he says cocaine's for horses not for men,
says it's gonna kill me but he don't say when,
I'm simply wild about my good cocaine"

But, he does attribute it to Luke Jordan. I can only remember the chorus part.

Clifton

Well it's 2 a.m. an' I foun' this thread
I'll be up all night with my nose all red.
I'm writing words, won' get no sleep;
This rock does roll but it don' come cheap.

Can blue men do the whites,
or white men the blues?
Who gives a shite,
When you got the good news.
RMG
Clifton -- If you ever remember or find the rest of the lyrics, let us all know, please -- sounds great.

Taj Mahal's version of "Ain't Nobody's Business", on "Satisfied 'n' Tickled, too" (CBS 81346 - UK cat.#) has the classic verse (roughly!)---

Champagne don't drive me crazy,
Cocaine don't make me lazy;
Ain't nobody's business if I do
Well candy's dandy
but Liquor's quicker
There ain't no ??? down in Costa Rica
Ain't nobody's business but my own.

Have a Purrrrfect Xmas
Rob

John Hurt, Mance Lipscomb and Rev. Gary Davis all did versions of songs called Cocaine and all are different. DvR's version, if I remember correctly, is closer to Davis's than it is to the others, but still pretty different.

Local blues man Al Hughes has recorded a darn fine version of the Rev. Gary Davis's version on his album "Sitting on Mr. Superbad's Hat".

I've done this song for years and given credit to Rev. Gary Davis. Am I wrong? Mike

David Bromberg is a great musician and performer, and to my ears "My Own House" was his best record -- mainly acoustic, solo or small ensemble, with a couple of live cuts thrown in. I've been playing his version of Blind Blake's "Chump Man Blues" ever since learning it off the album twenty years ago. I saw him on the tour he did to support this album (must have been around 1980), which followed the same format -- acoustic solo/duo/trio. Great stuff. He doesn't perform regularly any more, but if he ever does venture out, you should make it a point to see him.

Cheers, Steve,

How did I possibly forget the word "liquor"? !!

I take it you'd dwoned a few yourself, before typing! I had, hence the silly off the cuff lyrics above.

Additional verses on the same theme welcome from all.

I've started a thread on the origins of Taj's version -- Here, if my blicky works
