Well, as you all may know I am going to have alot of time on my hands (aside of the new job I start on Tuesday), and it has been suggested to me by several friends to find something to distract myself, some have suggested music and my poetry....so I have decided that I want to take up guitar lessons and such.....so what I was wondering if any one in the Portland, Oregon area has any leads on where I can obtain decent affordable lessons? Your help would be greatly appreciated...thank you.

Amergin, I have just a few suggestions, one of which is sort of vague. The first one is to check at Artichoke Music to see if there's a listing of guitar teachers, the second is to look around at other local cafes and bookstores (I know I've seen flyers for guitar teachers around town), and then there's a group class (I think) that's run by a guy named Chick Rose which is $35.00 for 8 weeks. The only problem with this last suggestion is that I can't tell you how to reach him directly; the person who told me about it didn't have the phone number with her at the time and told me to listen to the Sat. am folk music listings on KBOO. Good luck, blt

Hey Amergin, I've got to recommend my teacher. Heck, if you're going to go all the way to Artichoke, you might as well go to Vancouver. My teacher is George Chudacoff and he teaches at Brass Reed and Guitar, phone 360-254-9380. He's a good player and a good teacher. It's worth looking into, Margo

*all the way* to Artichoke? amergin, where do you live??

maybe I'm just spoiled...I live a mere ten blocks from Artichoke, and about five minutes away by bus from the fabulous new harp store on Morrison. Yay Southeast Portland!

Harp store? There's a harp store? Cool.

I took guitar lessons back in the 80's from two rather institutional places that I can't remember the names of. Wouldn't recommend either one. Try the ads in Willamette Week.
