Subject: Help! Bobby-Sox Alert -Santa Catalina?

Rick Fielding and I were goofing around and he started in on "Santa Catalina, the Isle of love" the 50's bobby sox tune. Can anyone tell me who did this? Search engines give no response. Tune is now stuck in my head (big deal, they all have the same damn tune, sh-boom...la,la,la,la,la). Drives you crazy.

yours, Peter T.

May you never have a moment of want. May all your camels fart downwind of you. May your oasis be dripping in houris. May you save your bank manager from an oncoming car. All these I wish you, O bountiful one.

yours, Peter T.

Peter, 'Spaw--

Thanks from the trip back in time--all the way to my first year in college! And now that I have the lyrics, I can try to work out accompaniment on my 5-string. Much obliged.

Funny thing......I couldn't remember the name of the song, but I remembered the group right away. My Dad seemed to have a passion for anyone using a number in their group name.....Four Tops, Four Preps, etc. and the "brother" named groups, ie. the Mills Brothers. Odd though that I don't recall anything by the Brothers Four.

And Bill......on 5 string? You definitely need to put that on a share file for us to listen to!!!

Hi Pete, I'm so glad to hear that you & Rick get carried away like that, it often happens with me when I'm practicing with my partner Neil. Towards the end of the evening things start to get a bit strange & we usually start up with 16 Candles or ShaaBoom (Life Could Be A Dream). 26 Miles has long been a softy for me. In 79 we had spent 30 days making a crossing from Maui to the West Coast under sail & no wind. Santa Catalina was our first landfall (even before customs) & it was just dawning, it was something. By the time we hit the beach it was getting towards late afternoon. We had been singing & playing together all the way across (3 other singers) & someone deceided that we should busk to pick up some cash but more so try to raise the eyebrows of some of the women. We started off with "Rollin Down To Ol Maui" & ended up a bit more cash than we had started with but just as forlorn, no one wanted any part of us after 30 days at sea & the look of lust in our eyes but still Catalina holds a spot in my heart. We must've sang that song over & over again all the way into San Diego. Thanks for this, I'm basking in memories before our big storm hits. Barry

Yeah, if I had know it was so easy to play 30 years ago, I would have started my own group -- Los FourPlays or something. I have always secretly wanted to sing "Duke of Earl" in public . yours, Peter T.

Yep it is easy alright! There are times when I break into a whole series of oldies that are based on the C, Am, F, G sequence. This song is among them.

The Wikipedia article on Santa Catalina Island says that songwriter Harold Spina published his song "Santa Catalina (Island of Romance)" in 1946. The song was performed and recorded by many pop artists including Tony Martin, Dorothy Collins, Gordon Jenkins and His Orchestra, The Modernaires, Eddy Howard and His Orchestra, Freddy Martin and His Orchestra, and several others.

I had trouble tracking down this forgettable song, but finally found a recording by the Dinning Sisters: And here's a forgettable 1947 recording by Eddy Howard:

Subject: ADDPOP: 26 Miles (Santa Catalina)-Belland & Larson
From: Joe Offer
Date: 25 Apr 20 - 06:14 PM

Now, the memorable song about Catalina, is "26 Miles (Santa Catalina)", by Bruce Belland & Glen Larson. The Four Preps made a hit of it in 1958:

26 MILES (SANTA CATALINA)
Bruce Belland & Glen Larson

Twenty-six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin' for me,
Santa Catalina, the island of romance,
romance, romance, romance.

Water all around it ev'rywhere,
tropical trees and the salty air,
but for me the thing that's a-waitin' there's romance.

It seems so distant, twenty-six miles away, restin' in the water serene.
I'd work for anyone, even the Navy, who would float me to my island dream.
Twenty-six miles, so near, yet far.
I'd swim with just some water wings and my guitar.
I can leave the wings but I'll need the guitar
for romance, romance, romance, romance.

Twenty-six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin' for me,
Santa Catalina, the island of romance,
romance, romance, romance.

Water all around it ev'rywhere,
tropical trees and the salty air,
but for me the thing that's a-waitin' there's romance.
A tropical heaven out in the ocean covered with trees and girls.
If I have to swim I'd do it forever till I'm gazin' on those island pearls.
Forty kilometers in a leaky old boat,
Any old thing that'll stay afloat.
When we arrive we'll all promote romance, romance, romance

Subject: ADDPOP: Avalon (Jolson & Rose)
From: Joe Offer
Date: 25 Apr 20 - 06:34 PM

The only incorporated city on Catalina Island is Avalon (population 3,728), built as a resort in the late 19th century. Half of the city burned in 1915, and chewing-gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr., bought out a controlling interest in the Santa Catalina Island Company in 1919. Avalon, of course, plays an important part in the story of King Arthur.

In 1920, the song "Avalon", which directly references the town of Avalon on the island, was popularized by Al Jolson. Here's the famous Benny Goodman recording:

And here's the Al Jolson recording:

I found my love at Avalon
Beside the bay
I left my love at Avalon
And sailed away
I dream of him at Avalon
From dusk until dawn
And so I think I'll travel on
To Av-va-lon

Yes I found my love at Avalon
Beside the bay
I left my love at Avalon
And sailed away
Oh I, dream of him at Avalon
From dusk until dawn
And so I think I'll travel on
To Av... va-lon...

AVALON
(Al Jolson and Vincent Rose, 1920)

[Verse]

Ev'ry morning mem'ries stray
Across the sea where flying fishes play
And as the night is falling
I find that I'm recalling
That blissful all enthralling day
[Chorus]

I found my love in Avalon
Beside the bay
I left my love in Avalon
And sail'd away
I dream of her and Avalon
From dusk 'til dawn
And so I think I'll travel on
To Avalon
[Verse]

Just before I sail'd away
She said the word I long'd to hear her say
I tenderly caress'd her
Close to my heart I press'd her
Upon that golden yesterday
[Chorus]

I found my love in Avalon
Beside the bay
I left my love in Avalon
And sail'd away
I dream of her and Avalon
From dusk 'til dawn
And so I think I'll travel on
To Avalon

[blink]

I don't suppose the Glen Larson who co-wrote "26 Miles" could possibly be the same Glen Larson who created and produced all those TV series in the 1970s and '80s (Knight Rider, Battlestar Galactica, etc.)....

Now there's a moment of cognitive dissonance.

I don't suppose the Glen Larson who co-wrote "26 Miles" could possibly be the same Glen Larson who created and produced all those TV series in the 1970s and '80s (Knight Rider, Battlestar Galactica, etc.)....
