A friend of mine is trying to remember the title of a song he once heard and can only remember part of the lyrics. We thought it sounded a bit like a folk song so I thought I would try this board. The only lyrics he can remember are: "A-round the corner hoo hoo, under the berry tree. A-round the corner, behind the barn, looking for Henry Lee." Any ideas on what the title of the song might be?

Try child number 68 in the DT. Don't know if this is it, but might be a start.

I lied. It is "Around the Corner" and is in the DT. Looks like a cute song.

Child 68 is a very different song. The one sought is more of a cutesy country/pop song likely done by Lawrence Welk, Mitch Miller, New Christy Minstrels or some such.

There may be two versions of this, or perhaps an original and a cleaned up one. I don't recall bloodshed in the one I remember (but the blood may have dried by now) and I also recall "Henry Lee" not "Emily". However the tune is the same as in the DT.

That's the DigiTrad database that you can access in the box near the upper right of the page. Type in [around the corner] with the brackets and you will get a short list including the lyrics the Gypsy pointed to. By the time I type this, Gypsy will probably have explained it better.

The South African singer Eve Boswell had a UK hit with this in the 50s - it was Henry Lee not Emily, and the A's and B's were stressed:

A-round the corner, yoo-hoo
B-neath the berry tree
A-long the footpath
B-hind the bush
Looking for Henry Lee

Wassail! V
