Subject: New Year's Party Recipes From: kimmers Date: 29 Dec 00 - 11:39 PM I have foolishly volunteered to have a few friends over for a New Year's Eve party. It'll be potluck, so I don't have to do all of the cookin', but I'd like for us to be well-fed and well-refreshed. So... anybody got some favorite recipes that are party-friendly? Things that can be made in advance and sit around well? I've still got half of the Christmas ham to work with, plenty of eggs and butter, cream cheese, all of the basics. I've also got a punch bowl and silly little punch glasses and glass hors d'ouvres plates that I've never used, so I'd be especially interested in punch recipes. Either with booze or without. Oh, and 18 champagne flutes I've never used. Many years ago, when I was in college, (okay, more like twelve or thirteen years ago) some of my friends threw a Communist Party. Everyone came dressed in red and they drank The People's Punch (vodka and cranberry juice). I don't think I can pull that off, but you never know. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Year's Party Recipes From: Amos Date: 30 Dec 00 - 12:12 AM No problem, lass -- hop off to the market and get yerself about four gallons of eggnog and two fifths of brandy. And five pounds of ice cubes. Distribute in porportion through the evening into guests by means of punchbowl and flutes. All will be well. Liven it up with somne cinnamon sprinkled on top, a pich of nutmeg and bob's your tailbone. Oh and a couple of pounds of Wheat Thins and some sliced cheese, a bowl or two of peanuts, some spring sausage sliced thin, and all will be merry. Offer seltzer water to them as don't want to make Mary. Or whoever. A |

Subject: RE: BS: New Year's Party Recipes From: WyoWoman Date: 30 Dec 00 - 12:20 AM WyoWoman's Very Festive, Way-Good Brie Stuff Get a wheel of brie, cover with peach or apricot preserves or chutney and some unsalted mixed nuts or just almonds or walnuts. If you're so inclined, slosh a couple of shots of brandy over it and flambeau its little self just before serving. If the alcohol isn't a welcomed visitor at your party, or you just hate to burn up good booze, just slip the nut-and-jam-bedecked brie in Mr. Microwave before you put it on the buffet table and heat it until the cheese softens but not until it turns back into butter. Serve with crackers or sliced sourdough or baguettes. I especially like it with the sort of sweet biscuits in the Carr's assorted cracker pack ... This is my plan for the New Year's Eve party to which I'm invited, and you're welcome to steal it. WyoWoman |
Subject: RE: BS: New Year's Party Recipes From: sledge Date: 30 Dec 00 - 04:42 AM The best new year food I have ever eaten was a turkey and spinach curry, the after effects don't need discussing but it tasted superb and it's now a regular favourite. Sledge |

Subject: RE: BS: New Year's Party Recipes From: Bat Goddess Date: 30 Dec 00 - 12:32 PM Cheese Salad : Grate a bunch of cheddar into a bowl. Grate shallots or onion to taste. Mix it all up with enough mayonnaise. Serve on small pumpernickel rounds, crackers or just scoop it up with your fingers. I stole the recipe from a friend years ago and it always get raves (and disappears fast). Bat Goddess |
Subject: RE: BS: New Year's Party Recipes From: jayohjo Date: 30 Dec 00 - 06:32 PM Hurrah! Vodka melon time! Unfortunately, I don't reckon you'll have time to make this as it takes about a week, but it's good to know - take a melon, bore a hole in it, stick a funnel in the hole, pour vodka into the funnel every day, then at the end of the week cut it open - et voila! Highly alcoholic slices of melon! Otherwise, there's always salsa dip - tinned chopped tomatoes, an onion, a red a green and a yellow pepper, some garlic, spices, and as many or few chillis as you wish - chop em up, stir em together, dip things in it. Easy peasy. jayohjo XX |
