Subject: spam From: kendall Date: 30 Dec 00 - 09:49 AM I keep getting spam from outfits that ignore my "Remove" return e mail. They provide a way to get off their list, but, they dont work. Anyone know how to block this crap? |
Subject: RE: Help: spam From: kendall Date: 30 Dec 00 - 09:59 AM Damn! Captain. If you wanted me to leave, why didn't you just say so? Spam, indeed! And CRAP????? HRRMMPPH! |
Subject: RE: Help: spam From: Zebedee Date: 30 Dec 00 - 09:59 AM Depending on the email software you are using, you should be able to block a sender. What's your mail program? Ed |
Subject: RE: Help: spam From: GUEST,Mary in Kentucky Date: 30 Dec 00 - 10:26 AM I hate spammers too. At first it was amusing, but now I get about 10 a day. Never respond to the "remove me from your list" address. They just use it to verify that your email address is valid. In the past I've used a site called spamrecycle.com. I don't know how successful it is, but I get a small delight in forwarding all spam letters to them. The Courier-Journal newspaper in Louisville just ran an article last month listing this site. (Spam Cop, http://spamcop.net/) The writer said it had reduced his spam significantly. He said it's best to forward the spam momemts after you receive it, to catch them in the act. I have several friends and relatives that like to send me greeting cards on the 'net. These sites are free, but I suspect they just collect email addresses and sell them. On my web page I list my email address with a $ sign instead of an @ sign so the robots don't pick it up. When I sign a guest book I don't give my correct email addy. I can often tell when my address goes to a new list because I'll get several messages the same day from the same ISP. Occasionally I suspect where my address was stolen from due to the nature of the messages...but then some are quite disturbing and embarrassing! |
Subject: RE: Help: spam From: Sorcha Date: 30 Dec 00 - 10:39 AM With Outlook Express, even if you block sender, they show up as new messages in the In Box. They are just automatically sent to the Deleted Items folder instead of the In Box. Have to clear out the Deleteds once in a while. |
Subject: RE: Help: spam From: Zebedee Date: 30 Dec 00 - 10:48 AM Sorcha, In Outlook Express(at least in version 4, version 5 is similar I think) go to 'Tools' and 'Inbox Assistant' Click on 'Add' put the offending address in the 'From' box and tick the 'Delete Off Server' box. No more spam... Ed |
Subject: RE: Help: spam From: Sorcha Date: 30 Dec 00 - 10:59 AM Cool! Thanks, Ed! |
Subject: RE: Help: spam From: Sorcha Date: 30 Dec 00 - 11:03 AM Nice try, didn't work. I don't have In Box Asst. Damme! |
Subject: RE: Help: spam From: Zebedee Date: 30 Dec 00 - 11:16 AM Which version of Outlook Express are you using? Ed |
Subject: RE: Help: spam From: Sorcha Date: 30 Dec 00 - 11:17 AM OE 5. I couldn't find it under "Tools" (I checked all the bars under Tools,) and checked all the bars under everything else, too. File, View, Help, etc. In Box Asst is not listed in the Help index...... |
Subject: RE: Help: spam From: Zebedee Date: 30 Dec 00 - 11:19 AM Which version of Outlook Express are you using? In Version 5, the same filter is called 'Message Rules.' This page should explain all you need to know. Ed |
Subject: RE: Help: spam From: Sorcha Date: 30 Dec 00 - 11:22 AM ahhhhhh, OK, I had tried Rules, and didn't see that.....thanks! |
Subject: RE: Help: spam From: Liz the Squeak Date: 31 Dec 00 - 07:56 AM Damn, wish I could do that with my sister's stuff - she sends me the weirdest selection of really sickly, slushy, nauseating pentecostal stuff, and rude pictures..... trouble is, I can't block her off as she is my only contact with mother at the moment.... Thanks for the tips for spammers though, I once got sent unsolicited stuff by a very bad author, who sent me the first 2 chapters of his new book (dreadfully written, badly formed and about as much plot as your average pile cream commercial). He sent it 3 times and to add insult to injury, the return address was unknown! LTS |
Subject: RE: Help: spam From: kendall Date: 31 Dec 00 - 08:15 AM I have a cousin who kept sending me all that bible thumping stuff, no matter how I refuted his statements, he just sent more, I finally said "I tire of this, let's quit this exercise in futility." He stopped. |
