Subject: Newry Boat Song (Gaelic)
From: Peg
Date: 30 Dec 00 - 03:27 PM

I heard this on the radio; it is by a group called Crann, on a CD called "Lover's Ghost". It is a haunting song, all male voices in harmony, mostly in Scots gaelic, some English, about a ship's journey from Newry to somewhere in the outer Hebrides...

anyone have the lyrics anywhere?

thanks!

Peg

BTW I have a copy of Gaelic Songs of Nova Scotia now if anyone should need lyrics for gaelic songs of, well, Nova Scotia. Least I can

Well, I haven't found the song, but I have found the Gaelic title - Mo Ghille Dubh Dhonn

I think a few of us have that particular book. Good book.

You could try contacting Crann lead singer Sean Corcoran c/o the Arts Council (I think it's the AC of N Ireland)

thanks for the suggestion and the title.

How would I contact this guy in Ireland? I would probably have to know at least which county etc. wouldn't I?

I am going to seek out the CD, too maybe it will have the lyrics.

Subject: Lyr Add: NEWRY BOAT SONG (MO GHILLE DUBH-DHONN)
From: Nynia
Date: 31 Dec 00 - 05:42 PM

Hi Peg, this is what it gives in the sleeve notes

A song in Scots Gaelic, with translation verses in English from the Isle Of Barra in the Outer Hebrides. An island girl laments the loss of her betrothed, who sailed to Newry on the East coast of Ireland to buy a cargo of seed potatoes; met a local girl, married and never returned. We first heard this sung by a host of fine singers on a windswept Sunday afternoon on the island. We later learned it from the singing of Flora MacNeill, Mary Smith, and Cathy Anne McPhee. The English title and verses are our own.

NEWRY BOAT SONG (MO GHILLE DUBH-DHONN)

Gur h-e mo ghille dubh-dhonn
Gur tu mo chuilean runach
Gur h-e mo ghille dubh-dhonn

San a' raoir d'fhuair mi'n cadal
Bha mi fad 'nam dusgadh

Smaointin air an fhear a threig mi
Snach d'rinn feum dha chumhtan

He's gone, he's gone, her lover's gone
And left her broken hearted

Chuala mi gun d'rinn thu Dhomhnaill
Posadh ann an Niubhraidh

Donall Donn the people say
You've married down in Newry

B'fhearr leam fhin a bheith nut posda
Na cuid or a Phrionnsa

She would rather have you, Donall
Than the gold of Princes

Och nam och mar tha mi nochd
Trom osnaidh 's mi gad iondrainn

Marcus; I have it on tape and could maybe figure out the solfaichez (not easy with some of these old celtic tunes) but I am no good at the other stuff, sorry!

Desi Wilkinson, of Crann, has occasionally turned up on Mudcat - so an email to him (address above) might be the way to get some more detail.

Regards

Gur e mo ghille dubh dhonn
Gur tu mo chuilean rùnach
Gur e mo ghille dubh dhonn.

'S ann a-raoir nach d'fhuair mi an cadal
Bha mi fad' nam dhùsgadh.

Smaointinn air an fhear a thrèig mi
'S nach d'rinn feum dha chùmhnant.

Chuala mi gun d'rinn thu pòsadh
Dhòmhnaill as an Iùbhraidh.

Och mo chreach mar tha mi a-nochd
Trom osnaich, 's mi gad ionndrainn.

Am fear a dh'fhalbh air bàt' an t-sìl
A tha mi fhìn ag ionndrainn.

Dol seachad Rubha nan Leac' Uaine
Dòmhnall Ruadh ga stiùireadh.

Dhòmhnaill Dhuinn ma rinn thu m' fhàgail
Fios mo chràidh gad ionnsaigh.

B'fheàrr leam eireachdas do phearsa
Na Sasann le ionntas.

B'fheàrr leam fhìn a bhith riut pòsda
Na cuid òir a' Phrionnsa.

'S fheàrr an t-olc a chleith na chlaisneachd
'S math leam fada null thu
