Can anyone give me the rest of the lyrics to the song that starts with "As I walked down the road at set of sun, The lambs were coming homeward one by one. I heard a sheep bell softly calling them, Along the little road to Bethlehem"

LITTLE ROAD TO BETHLEHEM
(Shawn Colvin)

As I walk down the road
I sit up some
The lambs were coming homeward one by one
I heard a sheepbell softly calling them
Along the little road to Bethlehem

Beside an open door as I drew night
I heard sweet Mary
A lullaby
She sang about the lambs at close of day
And rocked her tiny boy among the hay

Across the air the silver sheepbell rang
The lambs are coming home sweet Mary sang
You're a star of gold
You're a star of gold
Is shining in the sky
So sleep, my little baby
Go lullaby

As I walk down the road
I sit up some
The lambs were coming homeward one by one
I heard a sheepbell softly calling them
Along the little road to Bethlehem

Dunc,

Your 'at set of sun' sounds a lot more likely than the 'I sit up some' which the page I copied it from gives...

Thanks for those words. My partner was taught the song when she was 13 years old in the school choir - and she could only recall the first verse. She has been trying to remember them all over the Christmas period. I can now enter the New Year in peace - Thank you.

It's much older the Shaun Colvin.............

I think it was called "The Holy child"........ I remember singing it years ago (and my mum had been singing it long before then)

from memory the changes are

THE HOLY CHILD

As I walked down the road at set of sun
The lambs were coming homeward one by one
I heard a sheepbell softly calling them
Along the little road to Bethlehem

Beside an open door as I drew nigh
I heard sweet Mary sing a lullaby
She sang about the lambs at close of day
And rocked her tiny king among the hay

Across the air the silver sheepbell rang
The lambs are coming home sweet Mary sang
Your star of gold
Your star of gold
Is shining in the sky
So sleep, my little king
Go lullaby

As I walked down the road
at set of sun
The lambs were coming homeward one by one
I heard a sheepbell softly calling them
Along the little road to Bethlehem

Hi there Alison - thanks for that - those are the exact words I remember being taught at shool in East Kilbride c.1966 - I can now stop wracking my brain. Lizbeth (Dunc's partner)

No problem Lizbeth.. that's what we're here for....

I remember it vividly because one of the "your star of gold" lines hit a top "A".... probably the last time I hit one was all those years ago..... *grin*
